need some dog input

Hello i would like to get a me diam size hunting dog.I do allot of duck hunting but mostly in small ponds and fields sometimes tidal  flats always owned labs but my wife says i have to down size do to we travel allot in a RV.What do guys suggest Thanks for any info.

I think there is such thing as a water spaniel? I know there is a spaniel that is small and good for waterfowl. I too, am partial to labs. Were it me I would find a breeder that had a small lab a get the smallest female. Our last female was only about 44-45# and she was a great bird dog and traveler. Wife was kind of disappointed when the new pup grew to 70# as she liked the smaller one a lot.

My new pup is not even 7 months old and is 70 pounds now.  I think he's the perfect size.  Wish he would stop growing, but I think he still has a ways to go..

i got a 90# lab but i do have buddy's that have females that are alot smaller than your normal lab. If your partial to labs why not do some hw and find a litter with small stature in their breeding.

Here's a link to a well known breeder. With new or "Trendy" breeds, it is of upmost importance the person has a good history. Can't believe all the horor stories of people buying Labradoodles in the last few years. At least people are getting smart to them and the bandwagon puppy mill breeders who push them....

boykin is a good choice... also a GWP.... my gsp maxed out at 50 pounds..... but they have to have room to run or they will get to antsy to be in the house...

Boykin are the little ones that look kind of like cockers, right? That is what I was trying to think of in my earlier post. I have only seen chocolate colored ones are they are neat little dogs.

There is the American Water Spaniel. I don't know much about them except they're not very common, and from the American Water Spaniel Club website the females weight between 25 and 40 pounds.

They are great dogs, a friend has had several.  Also look up duck tolling retriever, cute dogs.

My personal opinion is go with a lab. You can get a smaller one to please the wife and still have a great bird dog. I got mine from this guy and will never go back. http://longhollowretrievers.com/. Mine weighs 70lbs and is a great bird dog.

some brittany's are good in the water and love to retrieve, but I would look at that as the exception, socializing and training do help. Mine will get the job done but isn't excited to do it. Springer's that I've seen are labs with shorter tails and more hair. My friend just picked up a two year old springer from a fellow member and he is nuts about retrieving and the water.

Field bred springer spaniel.  My pup is on the small side @ 35#.  Loves the water and bird crazy.  Small dogs are more sensitive to cold water than a heavier   lab.  I've been putting a neoprene vest on mine.
