.17 hmr or .22 wmr
« on: February 11, 2010, 07:59:53 PM »
I'm sure this question has been beat to death, but im torn between which would be a better all around caliber for shooting coyote, bobby coming in and stopping at 150 yrd with perfect condtions? .17 hmr or .22 wmr?? i've been doing a lot of research and find that they are both capable, but neither is "ideal"17 hmr or .22 wmr?? i am leaning towards .17 hmr cuz of flatter shooting at longer distance. and the accuracy of the .22wmr i'm not sure of at that distance? feel free to throw in personal experience...
thanks guys for the help, and sorry if this question is old and annoying

.17 is too light. The shot placement would have to be perfect...and I know they're only coyotes but I'm a firm believer in clean ethical kills and there's too much risk for me with a .17 or the .22 for that matter.

I'd rather shoot them with a .243 than a .17. personally I don't hunt for pelts....just want them dead.

I would get the 22 mag over the 17hmr. Just because the 22 mag has alitte more knock down. :twocents:

I said the 17 because i had a buddy whack a yote with one at 150yds. I might go for the 22mag if it was a semiauto ruger! double tap and done!

WFA was there a reason you limited your choice to the 2 calibers? I know in the Kittatas valley your are "Supposed" to only use rim fires between the KRD ditches? And over here on the Wet side the firearm restricted areas have the same kind of restriction??? If those weren't the limiting factors for you what were? Cost to shoot? Cost of rifle????  :dunno:

it was basically the cost of the rifle. But i decided to wait and buy the right tool for the right job. Which is what i knew i should have done from the start

Sounds like you made up your mind.... the rimfires are marginal at best in terms of being effective coyote guns.

I have a question about the .17HMR. Why?

Is this a round the market was really calling for?
