Cat's on the Dechutes River

A friend from Oregon sent this to me. All that it said was,   "Taken above the locked gate on the Dechutes river on 1/20/10."  I bet its up river from Malpin, anyway an interesting pic for cat hunters.

can't see the pic but i am sure i got the same one with the group of the cats along the ridge. very cool pic but sucks at the same time. with the cats and wolf populations as high as they are getting to be it won't be long untill the preditiors will have them wiped out.

Crazy that they have 5700 cats while Washington only has 2000.    In fact they are trying to get down to 3000 cats.

There's no way we have fewer cats than Oregon... at least not by 3x!!! Oregon has 3 times us and BC has 10 times us? I don't think so! Cougars are really hard to inventory... think about how hard they are to tag!

I can do it on one hand,we could have 7000 and still be told 2000 so we couldnt hunt them with hounds or get the seasons back..oopps got my tinfoil hat on

Dont have any idea how they come up with the numbers.  It is just very odd that on all sides of our borders the estimates are far higher than here.  I really have no idea myself but I have seen plenty of cats on trail cameras and seen the numbers harvested.  If there was only 2000 cats across the entire state I think sighting would be extremely rare.

number of cougars in Washington might be around
900 animals. An extrapolation across the state with
the highest cougar density reported in the literature
suggested the maximum number of cougars in
Washington might be around 4,100 animals. Since
2003, cougar population size has been assessed in three project areas in Washington. Currently,
the best available estimate of statewide abundance is from an extrapolation from those projects,
corresponding to about 1,900 to 2,100 animals (excluding kittens).
