  good luck and happy training i honestly think of my time in the field and training as the best part of my day....  i have a few GSPs and honestly don't think i'll own another kind... well maybe an english pointer for quail....  just curious where did you get him?

Just got back from picking up some pheasant wings from Dave and she loves them. I would throw them about 10 feet and she go get it and bring it right back and put it in my hand.

I got him down in the Vancouver area from a breeder that said they are called coldwatergsps or something like that.

Ya that's a good question. I've only owned labs. Do the point naturally or is there a process to go through?

I have a Shorthair and probably always will.  They're great dogs.

Not sure what you mean? This is my first bird dog and I'm just trying to get her used to the bird scent. If you have any recommendations please let me know.

Most Bird Dog people I know will use the wing on a string once or twice just to see what the pup will do.  If the pup points it, attacks it, smells it, none of it really matters and probably doesn't tell much about how the pup will turn out.  My pup never saw a wing on a string and didn't see his first pigeon until he was almost four months old.  The first pigeon he saw was wing locked and my pup flash pointed then went in for the attack.  This was done with a well known trainer because like you I was new to bird dogs.   Since then I've attended seminars, read books, watched videos, and sent my pup to a trainer for gun breaking and birds while I went through a divorce. 

There are a lot of good books out there, a lot of good trainers, and a lot of knowledgable people on this site which I'm sure would be willing to help.  My advice is to be patient and let the pup be a puppy.  You'll have plenty of time to enjoy him as a bird dog but only one shot at laying a good foundation.  I try to get out and train with birds once a month during the off season and do lots of yard work at home, if you ever want to get together or just talk about the pups don't hesitate.

Great looking little pup there. As mentioned you can get lots of help on here but do a little work on your own as well. The pup is learning and you will too. Basics are all that should really matter for a while. Let it be a pup, and make all things involving you fun for the pup even if it is not what you were hoping to see. There will be time to dial things in but the beginning needs to be all about you,her and FUN.

IMO use the wing sparingly I mean i played a little with a wing and my first pup...  but it's possible that over use of a wing will make the pups start to point birds on sight instead of smelling them...  like rowdy said get some books or DVDs i like the perfection kennel DVDs Delmar smith's book there are lots and lots of books out there... check out the perfection kennel dvds they are good stuff...  like bird guy said  Fun fun fun and tons and tons of exposure to birds... if you have a a softer dog hold off on exposing the dog to larger birds like pheasant.... stick with the pigeons or couturnix  quail are great....  a small pup stumbling on an exploding pheasant could scare them if they're not use to them.... I like to keep the hardcore training off until after his first season of learning.... that's just my deal there are plenty of people on here willing to help you out.... all you have to do is ask....  drop me a pm if you have a question... and if you're around Whidbey island come out and we'll get the dog out on a few of my quail

I think that you will want to get her to track them soon!  Drag them and hide them I think! But I have not trained one myself yet!
