The Phantom Ghost of Harriet Lou and Backcountry Bowhunting. Both great books the first has several stories and is written by a former outfitter/guide Roland Cheek.

I just started "The Complete Book of Elk Hunting" by Sam Curtis, a rocky mountain elk foundation book. It's really informative so far, lots of info on rifle hunting Montana type terrain. Covers recognizing habitats, understanding behavior, environmental factors, and planning your hunt.  :twocents:

Thanks for the info I will pick that one up next.  I am almost finished reading Mike Eastman's 'Elk Hunting the West' and it has been very helpful.  Hope to read a couple more before I get out scouting.  Thanks again for everyone's help..

Yes, The PlayBook is designed for Aug. Sept. Oct hunts & really directed more towards the bowhunter that needs to read a situation correctly & have elk close for a shot opportunity! There is no book out there today that has the research that this book has when it comes to sounds & when to use them & why the elk are using them! This info covers nearly 30 years of on hands research on OTC Public Lands with near 150 elk taken by hunters like you & I. All techniques are proven & sounds defined & used are accurate for anyones elk hunt! We are not Outfitters, just passionate elk hunters!

Sorry ElkNut I wasn't trying to dissuade anyone from your book.  I have it and along with your CD's learned more about elk hunting in one day than I have in my entire life.  I just don't think your book would be the best for  him since he's hunting late season elk with a rifle.

Hey, no apology needed! For rifle hunting outside the rut I agree there would be other books that would be a better choice! Thanks!

Mike Eastman's 'Elk Hunting the West' is pretty good -- but it is more rocky mtn oriented.  Not sure that any of them have any great secrets for people that have been elk hunting for years though.
:yeah: Thats the best one I have read. Gives you a state by state break down as well

:yeah:  In my experience, anything by the Eastman's is going to be 1. useful 2.  common sense  3.  Written based off real-world field experience.
