It's called the string yank technique. I've used it many times on other folks (Thankfully not myself) and even my dog last year. It's truly a great technique and works without causing any additional damage.
Google it for directions.

I like taking naps when I fish.  They stick around for a while while the bell is going off.

That's nothing, try sewing up a 3" long, down to the bone slice on your own forearm with an egg hook, 8 lb mono and a pair of needle nose.  Man that was a bitch!  When I was 10 I pulled 2 sets of treble hooks out of the back of my head and bled like a stuck hog.  Not fun stuff anyway you cut it!

I hooked myself last fall on Cowlitz with a single barbed hook, while casting, to the back of my head, under the scalp. It is not only that I got that sting, I ended being hit with 1 Oz led acros my face! Full swing cast!
I instructed my fishing buddy to drive the tip through (another hole) and cut the hook. The other friend couldn't even look... I bled profoundly, since this was a tear, not only a hook hole. Still have a small lump there... 
I fish for 35 years, and have never done something like this to myself... How did I manage this time, it is out of my powers to figure...

Soldotna, AK eye surgeons remove more fish hooks from the eye area or near eye areas than any other group in United States. I remember reading an article many years ago about the surgeons there and how busy they were during fishing season! (for those that don't know this is on the Kenai Peninsula)

Hey, that lure stuck in the guy's eye is a great lure for catching cuthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake.......at least it was 30 years ago when I was there.

That is a great lesson for always wearing sunglasses while fishing.  Ouch!

Here's one that looks as painful as the hook in the eye:

The dad-of-one was fishing for carp at a lake near his home when he tried to cast his line out into the water. As he went to flick it forward, the missile-shaped weight caught in undergrowth behind him. Instead of untangling it, the frustrated fisherman tugged as hard as he could. It broke free and rocketed towards him – going straight into his skin like a bullet. Shocked Peter staggered to a nearby house to get help. Paramedics cut the fishing line before rushing him to hospital. The engineer said: I could see the line hanging out of a perfectly formed hole. It was still attached to my rod, which was in my hand, and I could feel the weight in the back of my throat. It really was the most strange feeling – I had caught myself.
