Eberlestock - J107 or J34??
« on: January 09, 2010, 10:16:37 AM »
Gonna use my gift certs for a new pack... I've narrowed it down to the J107 or J34.... anyone try both to compare?

Cabela's only had the J107- hard to tell the difference in the Eberle catalog- other than the price.

Pretty sure you can't buy a J107 anywhere unless used.  I tried in October after getting a flyer of a discounted price.  I ended up with the J34.  I called Kenetrek to confirm they sent me the wrong pack, and they said they were given the last of the J107's and had them clearanced before I ordered.  The J34's are the new upgraded J107.  I had to pay the full price and ended up with the J34, which is a well built all-around pack.
................Oops.  I did some checking and I was refering to the J104, not the 107. The 107 is the big pack.  Sorry

after my beloved, favorite, fit me to a tee>J104 was stolen in August 2009, along with other stuff, I replaced it with the J34.
the J107 is a beautiful pack but really designed to take a load in (backpacking gear) and the load out with added weight of game. the 107 would be big for large daypack purposes, even when scaled down.
My 104 was perfect and served me well for a large volume daypack and the zippered expandability feature was used often to bring out the meat.

the J34 is a slimmer version of the J104. Mine was ok this year and packed out elk and deer meat, head-antlers too. but the 104 fit my torso so much better. It took a while to adjust the j34 and compared to the J104, I'm 90% satisfied. The waterproof zippers are a great improvement in the 34 over the 104. this past 2009 was a wet and cold one but my new j34 stayed dry.
with my gear for a long day, my J34 weighed in at 17 lbs without spotting scope-tripod.

Thanks MAV - good input.

Would you be able to comfortably pack-in a solo camp with the J34 or J104?

The J34 would be a slimmer model then the 107.  If you are humping and bivy hunting then the 107 would be the ticket.  But it weights more then the J34.  When hiking weight is what limits your ability to move and get to the animals.

I own the 107 and a crookedhorn masterhunter day pack that has a shelf for a rifle or bow.   I need a pack for deep bivy hunting (107) and one for a day pack (crookedhorn).

Just my opinion...

I packed in 45lbs during an early buck season.
that included a 6lb all season tent, 4lb sleeping bag, extra clothes.
that even left room for a boned out buck, perhaps 2 trips with meat, but no buck on that trip.

we compared my J34 to partner's J107. That 107 is a large capacity pack. His load was 45 lbs and we figured he'd get a boned out buck-hunt gear in one trip.

that rifle scabbard feature is great when packing out meat. Worked very well on packing out spike hind quarters this past fall.

I have the Gunslinger and it's a solid day pack; a little too small for overnight trips.  I give the pack a 9 out of 10 on design and manufacture.  As far as packing out all your gear and a boned out buck; now that's a tall order in any mountainous terrain for any man or pack.

I've ripped out my first generation 2200 Badlands twice hauling meat (repaired both times), and I don't care much for the new 2200 which I've used a few times.

J34 - you will not regret the purchase.  Look at the skycrane II; that will get your gear in!

Packs, they're to hunters, what shoes are to women.

I have the J-107 and the gunslinger. I would recommend the j-107 to anyone. With your rifle , spotting scope, water extra gear and an entire boned out buck with head you will have no problems getting it out in one trip. I cannot tell you how handy it is to be hands free, the best part of it is that you dont have a pesky rifle getting in your way while hiking. The j-35 I dont know much about but if it is anything like the dragonfly you will not be disappointed at all. The gunslinger is a great pack but is a day/shot hunt pack. It is handy to have if you other means of packing meat.

You guys are good at spending my $$.  J107 it is.... pulling the trigger today!

FYI - the J34 is the new, slimmer, smaller version of the old J104, with a softer flexible frame. The J-107 is a new beefier, bigger pack with a more solid frame.

Packs, they're to hunters, what shoes are to women.

That's awesome. Though, I'm mostly a camper and pretend hunter on occasion.

To get my skycrane I had to convince the wife I would get rid of a few other packs I don't really use that often anymore.

My excuse for having them was about the same as most women's excuse for having so many shoes "depending on where I'm going/what I'm doing I might want a different one".
