I too was issued a Winchester 94 30/30 when I graduated from elementary school and killed my first buck with it that year. I still have it and just started shooting it again last year. I think I might carry it for whitetail this fall.

mine was a remington .700 adl .243 youth model open sights. i saved up for 3 summers prior picking strawberries to buy a motorcycle RM50, and sold it to buy the gun for my first year of deer season. i killed my first 4 bucks with the gun and 2 spike elk, all with open sights.

Model 71 Winchester .348!! Hell of a gun for an 11 year old in 1957. It was the only spare rifle my dad had, Killed 2 bucks with it the first day out!! Northern Calif. where you got 2 deer tags. Hunted with it for many years and probably killed 20 bull elk in my younger years. Got 2 bulls my first day of elk hunting back in '62 when party hunting was normal. Keep shooting til the tags are filled!! I still have it but haven't used it for many years.

When I passed my hunter safety course @ 10 my dad said I could deer hunt when I saved enough money to buy my own rifle, I mowed alot of lawns and did cleanup work on some of his construction sites and by the following season had saved enough to buy a Savage .308 model 99c off a friend of his. He made me a good deal on the gun and I earned every penny($125), dad didn't loan me a dime.

First deer rifle was a savage 99 in .300, missed two bucks and used my mom's interarms 22/250 to kill my first deer. My son shot his first buck at 10 with a 1917 Enfield 30.06, still have all but the 22/250.

The first rifle I hunted deer with was my moms first rifle. It is a Savage in 300 savage. Killed my first few deer with it and my first bear. One year for my birthday.....many, many years ago, She had a small plate engraved and put into the wood stock of the gun. They also had the stock refinished and new scope mounts put on it. The engraved plate just said...Love Mom. Gave it to me for my birthday. I love that gun but after having the work on the stock and mounts done I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it. I have'nt killed anything with it since....20+ years. I have not hunted with it since my mom passed and that has been 12 years. I love the gun and will never get rid of it but man I can't hit crap with it. So I geuss it is kind of a Love-Hate thing.
