A thought on Fish Knives....
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:55:57 PM »
Hey Guys,

Been thinking about a Fillet knife I just did with a Factory ground 440C Stainless Blade....

It's not Bona-Fide Knifesmith Art, per se. It's a factory ground and profiled blade. But it's gripped by hand, and slightly customized.....

... And I can do them all day long for $65!!!

Here's this one...

Again, it's not my art... it's not likely to end up in the knife page gallery... but just standing here holding it, it's a really nice handling and super sharp Fish knife! 440C is a solid stainless with real good performance and edge retention.

They'll be Micarta gripped and Kydex sheathed. Super durable and ready for Salt Water environments.

I can get this one, a 12" overall, 6 5/8" cutting edge.
Or I can get a big one, 16" overall  with a 11" cutting edge.
Or I can get a trout sized one, 10" overall with a 5 5/8" cutting edge.

I'm gonna make some for local sale, so if you're interested, please let me know! Thanks!

Steve, I'll take the first one.....  How well do you think they'll hold an edge.  I don't the difference between anything metal other than what lead is and how it melts into nice fat sinkers...

440C is good steel. All the other 440's are kinda lesser, but 440C is very good stuff.

I'll mark you down and send you a PM, Thanks!

Wanna send me one to demo/ review? I like the idea of the shorter knife.

Be sure to post some pics of the finalized versions. I'm not big on SS and would be cool with a very hi quality carbon that I don't have to touch up as often.

I'd probably take 1 or 2 of the 12" OAL ones too....looks like a great gift for the father in law. Let me know when you have ready for sale.

I'll get a few going...

Fish, I have a bunch of carbon blades in my "Available Blades" thread under the "Sponsors" forum. Look at the Budget Bandsaw Boning Blades that I've hand ground. They're a little more expensive and won't be as clean as the computer ground blades, but you should have the edge retention. (I'll do whatever you want on the grip too.)

Rougheye, the factory produced blades are very flexible. Mine are flexible, but not nearly as flexible. I have to leave a little more steel there as I'm not as precise as machining equipment and computer controlled grinders. I hold them in my hands, rest my wrists on my middle, and grind then with the swivel of my hips! Individual, yes! Factory are cookie cutter, but they're top quality, and quite flexible.

Ordered a dozen examples today. Cohoho will have the first "Alaskan!"

just ran down stairs to measure my fillet knife. 5" handle and 8'' blade made by dexter russell with 5133-7 stain free high carbon. I like the size of it but it has to be resharpened often. I'll take one in that size if you can. Stainless does hold an edge pretty well but flexibility is also important. A guy can never have enough good knives... or guns... or rods... or bullets... or lures.... or camping gear... or trucks... or............................. :chuckle:

Just got the blades today.... Good-NESS those Alaskans are huge! I've got ..

4 - Trout 10.5" OAL, deeper tapered 5.5" blade...

4 - Standard 11.5" OAL, 6.5" blade... pictured above. (Should have 5, but I can't see the 5th one so I won't count it. It must be in the shed or something....)

3 - Alaskan 16" OAL, 11" blade.

I'll be building them up this week. I'll post pics when they're built.

Fish Knives....FOR SALE!!!
« Reply #14 on: February 25, 2010, 07:00:43 PM »
Ok, here's some of them. I've got a couple more to go, and I'll be sheathing these on Monday... (I've got a couple days of Cougar calling to do!)... But let's start with these!

$65 Each! Delivered!

NOBODY had dibs on any in this pic, Cohoho is the only one who's locked in and he's covered, so if you wanted one, claim it...

here...

now!

Sorry for the poor picture, it got late on me, couldn't use the sun. After this wave I'll re-photograph and start another post in "Sponsors."

They're all Micarta, brown and black, except one of the standard sized black ones is rubber. I might do more of them, that came out nice.

They'll all have tackle box style kydex sheaths.

(The blue bar on the bottom is a 12" ruler.)
