I Need Help!!!
« on: February 28, 2010, 09:16:12 PM »
So a little about myself first.  As a kid I hunted with my uncle but on rare occasions.  I hunted for squirrel, Rabbit, and Whitetail Deer but have only been successfull at hunting squirrel.  Ive tried hunting Deer and Rabbit on my own but never seem to be successfull.   :dunno:  Im in the military and am originally from North Carolina.  Ive been in WA for a year now and have became really interested in Upland Game Bird Hunting.  Ive gotten lucky and killed two grouse on my own walking a gravel road but other then that, nothing else.  Now for the fun part.  My Wife and I just recently took in a English Springer Spaniel pup/German Shepherd mix a couple weeks ago.  We have really bonded with her and shes an awesome addition to our family.  We took her, and our Rottweiler out to the woods on the back side of Fort Lewis the other day and she really had me awestruck.  Now i dont know anything about hunting with dogs but Ive seen it on TV and Ive read a few articles.  I honeslty think she would do a great job as a hunting companion.  As soon as she got out of the car she was on it.  She was in every nuck and cranny she could find looking for birds.  Once she flushed one she watched which direction it flew and went after it.  She naturally wanted to hunt birds.  She just couldnt run out of energy.  So now im really interested in trying to train her and myself in hunting birds, but i know nothing of it.  Beside the regular sit, laydown, stay and break thats the farthest i know.  If anyone can give me directions to what to do i would really appreciate it.  Should i buy a DVD on Pointing or just Flushing?  Should I even try it knowing she is mixed with German Shepherd?  What about the fact that shes six months old?  The biggest question is, I dont know anything about training a Gun Dog/Bird Dog should I even try it?  Any help would really be appreciated.  Thanks

ncredman69 the top dog that my dad ever raised and trained was half black lab half german shepard. At times he said he thought "Dutch" could read his mind. When he would miss an easy shot Dutch would give him a look like I cannot beleive you just missed that bird. PM me sometime I will try and meet you to run my GWP with your pup.

The Mount Mainier Sporting Spaniel Club is an all breed spaniel group and has field days at Scatter Creek.  There is a springer club here in the NW also

http://www.sportingspaniels.org/

Good books for training a flushing dog are "Hup" by James Spenser and "Spaniels and Retrievers" by Ken Roebuck.

If I can remember some others I'll add them to this post.
