Anyway to know if you will be delayed?

I have yet to actually buy a gun, been lucky and they have all been passed on to me so far, but plan to purchase a Buckmark in the next couple of weeks. I have my concealed weapons permit and hope I will be able to go in, pick the one I want, and walk out. Any chance this will happen or will I be delayed most likely since I have yet to purchase anything? Anyway to find out if I would be delayed before I go in to make the purchase or speed the process along before hand? I'm planning to go to Cabela's to make the purchase, last time I was down there they had a good looking selection available, so having to drive back down there a second time to pick it up wouldn't be much fun.

shouldnt have any problem at all as long as you have your cpl. having not purchased anything before wont affect anything.

Nope, if you've got your CPL, then the only reason you'll get delayed is if you've got a name spelled the same as someone on a terrorist watch list.

  I don't have a cwp,  but I get delayed every damn time nobody can ever tell me why or how to fix it. Just wait the 5 business days and pick it up, they never seem to come up with a reason why I can't have a gun, well probably because there isn't, but they always make me wait it out. This is on long guns, who knows what the hell would happen if I went and bought a handgun, FBI might show up to check me out personaly . I'm sure I would have made a few more purchases here and there if I didn't have to deal with this damn "delayed status" every time.

Tonto, you may very well have a felon or other questionable character out there with your identical, or near identical name and date of birth. This does happen and the feds have created a database to help you from always getting delayed. The database is called the Volunteer Appeal File (VAF). You fill out a couple of forms, authorize the FBI staff to enter your data to this special databank, they issue you a special number....  Later when you attempt to buy, you provide the number at time of purchase, and the NICS staff then quickly gets you thru the process.

i just bought a 22 rifle and i had to wait overnight i also have my CPL and was told it didnt matter.

The only time I've been delayed was when NICS was down, no way to know ahead of time.

99.9% of the time it won't be an issue...
Only those with common, or similar FULL names seem to have issues--which is rare.

But hey, if you're still looking and thinking about buying it "in the next couple of weeks" then why does it matter if you get delayed an extra day or three?

I get delayed every time.  With the name John Jones, you have to expect it.

no way to know for sure most of the time you won't but if you usally get delayed expect it with other people maybe having the same name or they could just be busy and delay it as well.

Do you have a marginal past from the wild teen years?  If the record is clean and no prior run ins with the law you should be good to go.  Unless like mentioned you have the same name as someone on the naughtly list and it automatically gets flagged each time until further investigation is done.  I would go and get your concealed weapons permit.  It might help the process along.

There's a good chance you wont have to wait, but it still sounds like some have to wait even with the CPL and their ID. It took about 30 minutes total filling the paper work out and him calling to make sure I'm clear. He even walked me out the door...just not out to my car, what a jerk.

CPLs don't help at all on a long gun. If you want to make sure, follow Iceman's suggestion:
