Sun bleached Mule Deer Sheds re-colored.
« on: February 02, 2008, 09:49:06 PM »
Here are a couple of the befor Pictures.  A couple guys were asking if I had pictures of the sheds befor I stained them.  I didn't think I had any but I found some.

BEFOR

AFTER

Their not quite done yet.  Going to rake the heck out of them on some Green wood I have out back that I havn't had time to cut up into fire wood.  Their are easier ways to get the shredded wood around the bases but this looks more natural and will help add a bit more color.

Thanks Guys.

I did this with 2 different colors of Min Wax Furniture Stain.  In about 6 different layers.  Took me 2 weeks and about 3 hours.  I've got about another hour worth or work to do on them raking them on the wood polls.

How much do you charge to do that if you don't mind me asking?

They look great!

I charge $35 an hour to stain antlers.  It realy depends on the size of the rack and what kinda shape it is in.  Also depends on how much time I need to spend working on it.  I won't work on antlers that are chaulky.  They will never look right and won't take the color well.

If it is hard white with good size cracks in it than I will have to fill the cracks let the filler set up and than begin the staining process.

Hmm....I will have to check out the Mule deer rack I have hanging in the rafters down at my dad's house. I'm not sure how bad of shape it is in. Thanks for the info.

If it is a rack and not sheds and it has been out of the weather than it probably isn't all that bad.  Sheds and racks that have been sitting in the weather tend to be in the worst shape.

the sheds in the picture were in pretty good shape.  Mostly minor cracks.  I think I filled in a few.

It is a rack with the skull plate still there. It has been indoors ever since I got ahold of it. I'm going to grab it while I am down there this weekend. I'll post up some pics of it.

Looks like there's more than one approach to coloring antlers. Nice job Michelle, and from what I can see in your pics duckfvr, yours turned out nice too.

The ones I found in Oct were bone white on the exposed sides and natural brown on the under side. No chew marks at all. Perfect condition. Took them home and went through my coloring process. The photo's of my stained sheds are after the first steps of that process.
