my buck from this season Unit 371
« on: February 02, 2008, 11:04:29 PM »
It was the third day of the hunt Nov.19th in the same canyon.  We new there were deer in the area, big deer tracks and lots of shedded sage a small but once large hidden water supply and tons of cover.  We hunted a canyon west of this one first thing in the morning and saw a couple of smaller bucks, where we had seen a few nicer ones scouting.  We decided to drive over closer to the canyon where i had harvested the buck.  About 1 mile down the road just before the canyons edge wackmaster spotted a buck following a single doe.  The truck stopped and i got out got my gun out of the case and loaded it,"firing center rules", by-pod out ass in snow,  25" fork pretty heavy.   Decided to pass as the doe ran out of sight over a small roll in the  hillside down into the canyon as the buck followed.  I put everything back away and we drove up to the other side of the canyon and got out the spotting scopes just to look for any we might not have seen.  As i focused up my Nikon 20x60x82 i saw my buck, and then the fork as they circled eachother i stopped watching and gathered my gear.  As wackmaster watched from the top of the canyon i decended down to the canyon bottom 1500 feet down quikly.  With a roll in the hillside to hide me i was able to sneek up to a 120 yards before taking him..   I have to thank my good friend and long time hunting partner for the oppertunity, he's convinced me to put in for several yrs. now and finally it paid off.   I'll pay him back in wyoming.
Work sucks!!!! I should be shed hunting

That's a beautiful buck. I didn't know it was legal to shoot them with cannons in this state. What an exit wound!

Great story and pics, funny how such a desolate place can hide such monsters. Congrats.

those few words can't describe what i saw at first through the spotting scope to what i saw through my rifles scope to seeing him piled up in some sage.  undescribeable..... i feel very fortunate thats for sure.  all the hard scouting trips on the body and our vehicles especially paid off nicely.  I'd been telling my hunting partner Roy all through scouting and previous weeks before the hunt i wanted to shot a heavy horned buck.  didn't need to be wide just heavy, looks like my luck was finally good for a change.

Very nice buck.  Nice palmation extending to the forks from the non-typically decorated bases.  It would be a pleasure to have his age determined, then let the rest of us know?  The Firing Center has some wicked deer hidden in it's bomb craters.  50 BMG is the preferred fashion in that area,  I'm at a loss as to why you dropped 1500 feet to get within range?  Congratulations and I'm glad you put in for that tag.  The best buck I've ever seen was in the 90's skylined in the bunch grass on Umtanium Ridge just past the rest stop on the right heading to Ellensburg.  He was a true to life "RockingChair", a real 250 plus net.  Again, good choice of area, great stalk, and perfect projectile placement.  Great hunt and hunter!

Beautiful buck!  I'm jealous because I spent a week hunting that area two years ago, but had to deal with the fog.  Finally got a 3x3 on the last day.  My bucks antlers had some similiar stuff going on down by the bases and eyeguards.  Wish his rack was as tall and as massive, though.  Would like to draw this tag again, I liked hunting on the Yakima Range.

Nice Buck!!!!!!  I hunted that unit in 06 had a great time.  Weather is kind of a pain in the A__  but thats life.   Not sure what my buck would score but I am sure not as much as yours.  Thats a nice washington deer.
