Cleaning a new rifle or pistol

Do you need to clean a new gun prior to shooting? While back I purchased a new 10-22 and was going to shoot it this weekend. Wanted to break it in right. I noticed in the instructions it suggested to clean the bore after 50 rounds.

Yes I would clean it before you shoot it to get any oil or metal shavings out I would run a patch with cleaning solvent through it and a few dry ones. The you should be ready to fire.

i dunno if you necisarely NEED to.  but every rifle i buy, new or used,  first thing i do is clean is really good,  and make sure no parts are missing.  i even clean guns that were cleaned before they were sent to me (used ones).

Wait a second, you make it sound like you buy guns on a regular basis, yet you just posted a topic titled:  "new rifle. need to sight it in, and have no idea how to"

So with all the experience cleaning guns you've never had to sight one in until now

I happen to enjoy cleaning guns so yes mine all get cleaned ones loaned to me get cleaned...then I enjoy shooting and more cleaning however the 10/22 I am using does not like being really clean seems to prefer being a bit dirty

I would clean a center fire rifle before shooting, but probably not a 10-22.

factory new guns i always clean before shooting.  mainly to get the packaging grease and any metal shavings off of it.  i know when i bought my kimber C2 a few summers ago the owners manual had in big bold red print "field strip, clean and oil prior to first firing" written on the top of the maitainance page.

on used guns ill clean them to get the oil/grease off of them so i can better see the wear marks, and so i can use my oil/grease.  ive seen some pretty strange stuff used for gun lubes

the new rifle i bought is my 5th rifle, i have 9 guns,  i just never put a scope on any of them,  and all the huntinh i ever did was using a shotgun so it doesn't get sighted in,  lol,  but now that i have something to shootcoyotes from a long distance away,  i need to learn about sighting it in.

I clean my new guns well before I shoot them. Why not, It dose not take long and then you have nothing left for wounder.
