In the market for a bolt short action .308

Has anyone been to any firearms dealers or been online and seen a bolt, short action .308 rifle for around $300, im in the market for my first rifle and eager to go shooting and get back into practice before the season starts,i prefer the marlin xs7, and hoping to find something with a scope and the supplier for marysville walmart said that they can't ship to walmart any more, no clue why.  Any one have any suggestions, thanks mama mickey

Check out Savage. If you google Savage firearms you will find their site. Savage and Stevens both offer some great deals on Rifle/scope packages.  Keep in mind though the scope that comes with a sub 300$ rifle will be a poor one.

My son has this in the XL7 in 270win. Wonderful rifle for the price. ($320 out the door Christmas a year ago)

I know that Walmart uses Lipsey's.  They carry both the Marlin XS7 and Stevens 200.  Two other big suppliers are Jerry's Sports and Ron Shirks (sp).

what do you folks think of the Remington 770 .308 Winchester i found it on a gun auction for under 300, wondering if it would make a good rifle for my first and for a female?? thanks mickey

It's a good budget gun good price for sure. If you have never shot a rifle or shotgun before a .308 may surprise you with the recoil. Are you looking to start hunting? Deer or ?

yes this will be my first rifle havent shot a rifle in years and going after deer, cougar, elk, beer and small game hoping for a turkey as well.

A 308 would be good for all that. But for turkey I'd pick a shotgun. Hit a turkey with a 308 and there might not be much left to eat.

The Stevens 200 trigger is heavy "as-is", but it's really easy to adjust it down to about 3-3.5 lbs.  The Marlin has an accu-trigger-type set up.  

The scopes that come in a combo (with the exception of Howa) package are pretty low-end.  You'll end up upgrading to a better quality optic.  

I'd buy just the rifle... then, use the money saved toward a better scope.  The Pentax Gameseeker 4-12x40 (3" eye relief) is a good scope with a great price (about $70 if you know where to look).  Also, the Federal Intensity (made by Weaver) line are darn good for the money.  Check out www.sportsmansguide.com.

I picked on of those up for a lady friend who is shooting it well...the pkg scope is not the greatest but it works for now.  I'm looking at the new Redfield scopes to top the rifle when the $$ are there.  It seems to be an accurate rifle and runs well.
