Now I can really get stuck(Cat hunting rig)
« on: February 26, 2010, 03:06:44 PM »
Built up this 87 Samurai this summer for cat hunting. Nothing radical. 2 inch lift, softer set of springs, BFG Mudders,  4.16 transfer case gear reduction, 2 inch exhaust. Weighs 2500 lbs full of fuel and gear! "Gramps'" was brave enough to go cat hunting with me in my Sammi. We took this pic at 4,700 ft looking for tracks. Did see a coyote in a no hunting area.  Wondered how he would react to a wolf howl? Boy did he ever, took off like his tail was on fire. We were 400 plus yards away. Fun day for us, not the dog!!! :yike:

Nice set up.  I wondered how those newer BFGs would clean themselves out.

Thats funny as hell...reminds me of something I saw in Iraq. We were stopped on a main highway waiting for the Iraqi National Guards to clear some nearby houses because their convoy was hit by an IED. Well their method of clearing houses was hitting them with RPG's from 50 yards away. There was one house they hit with an RPG that had a 3 legged dog in it....I saw that dog run 200 yards in our direction through an open field; up and over the highway for another 300 yards on the other side to get turned around from another RPG strike....so 300 yards back our direction...up and over the highway...and he disappeared after about 300 yards on the other side... I swear that 3 legged dog ran faster than any animal I have ever seen  :chuckle:

MtnMuley.
Seem to do a good job. Although the rig is so light I have to deflate the tires to 2 to 3 lbs of air to even begin to air them out.

Ranger91298,
Guess it depends on how much interest one has in "getting the heck out of Dodge!"

Twas a fun day.
After the chinook going on today, there won't be any snow this side of Idaho to mess around in.
It never changes, but it is always different.

Yes would be nice,  :IBCOOL: but tell my wife the news, :hello: I'm way over $$$.  But it does the job as is and I paid 500 bucks for the base rig with 87,000 miles, most of them behind a RV.

I've been building sammi's for almost 15 years now.  With a 2 inch lift 29 inch tires and a locker in the rear, there wont be to many places you cant go in two wheel drive.  I hade one with 32" tires and I did most of Evens Creek in two wheel low.  I remember getting stuck on a large root right in front of some Jeep'rs eating lunch.  About the time they started laughing at me, I looked at um and said, "guess I should put it in 4 wheel drive"  :IBCOOL:

first one was back in 03, it had 33" tires and about 6" lift Locked front and rear.  2nd pic is my current Sammi on MT Adams

Wazukie,
I,m running stock carb and motor, I'm getting 14 to 15 mpg in mostly mt driving.  Is that about what a guy should get from my setup?

you should be getting better than that.  The problem with stock carbs is that they either work or they dont.  The one I had with 33's on it was all stock other than the 4.16 t-case.  NOt sure what my mpg was but I could run all weekend and not burn 1/2 tank in the thing.  My current Sammi is pretty much stock other than the change from 205 to 215 tires and I get around 28mpg.

a common problem with the 1.3 is the valves need to be adjusted every so often.  Also make sure that you have NO vacumme leeks.  These are the 2 most common causes of poor performance in the 1.3l
