Austin Halleck 50 cal. 375 grain sabot lead spitzer boat tail made by Buffalo Bullet Co. (not anymore sadly) in front of 120 gr. of 777.

Too much personal history with this rifle to leave it home.

If I ever screw up the courage to go round ball hunting for elk I'll take this one:

Shot my first muzzle loader elk with an old under-hammer Hopkins & Allen buggy carbine in .45 cal. Worked just fine but no longer legal except for deer.

I leave tomorrow for elk.

DJR,
.45 cal is legal for ELK in Washington. Is the rifle not legal due to breech?

whitelightning is right, this is from the regs.

A muzzleloading shotgun, rifle, or handgun
used for all other big game must be .45
caliber or larger.

DJR,
.45 cal is legal for ELK in Washington. Is the rifle not legal due to breech?

Well, I'll be dipped, it is legal. Don't know where I was getting my information from, just remembered it wrong from somewhere. Possibly Montana or Idaho. Any case it looks like it would be legal (open and exposed etc.) Too late to sort it out for this trip as I'm leaving today but good to know for future reference. It's a handy little thing, the "model 94" of muzzle loaders.

Wish me luck, I'm gone hunting.

Home-made lefty .54 flinter or home-made .54 caplock replica of a real Hawken. Black powder. Round ball. Clean with plain room-temp water. Simple is good.

started with a Cabelas 54 cal. Hawkins replica, went to a 54 cal CVa,then a 50 cal. Austin Halleck (great gun) I still have it but now i use a Knight bighorn.
Put the Austin&Halleck to rest afraid if something breaks can't get replacemet parts.Bighorn is a GRRRREAT muzzleloader very accurate. 95 gr. 777 and 300 gr. Hornady SST.

Started with a TC Hawken 54, now use an underhammer 50, awesome lock time, no misfires, light, and get some looks (what the heck is that?).
