Montana Elk Hunt
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:09:06 AM »
So my old man and I put in for our Montana elk tags this weekend. We are considering going with a guide but also considering going on our own since it would save us a couple grand each. We hunted over there once about 10 years ago and didn't do too well. We were there in November and it actually broke records for warm temperatures.  >:( There were a few days we were actually able to hunt in t-shirts because it was in the 60's. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any general areas that we should check out during our scouting trips this summer or if you know of any good resources to check out that shows decent public land. We are the type of hunters that like to get well away from roads and people so pretty much anywhere is fair game. Thanks in advance!

We were looking at hunting the western side but are open to anywhere. The one time we hunted there was down in Southwest Montana around the Twin Bridges area. I did end up shooting a decent buck but we were there mainly for elk and since the weather was SO warm we struggled. Even the locals were having trouble finding any elk. It got so bad that we actually saw a moose in the snow line at like 8,000 feet.  :o
