I've got 9 points for CO deer now...will start planning a hunt in the next year or two.  No experience in those units.  I've hunted the plains a couple times and let me tell you  :o they build 'em big out there near the NW corner of Kansas.

The group of us are using our 11 deer points this year. Have been to Co. several times but not in those units. Last time we went to 76 for elk, which is right next to 68. Lots of elk but the only deer we saw were close to town of Creede in the valleys and farm lands.

Roger what did you think of the elk hunting in Unit 76?  I have 11 points and could draw it this year, but think I'm gonna pass.  Any information is appreciated.  What unit are you and your group hunting for Deer or do you know yet?

I have 7 points. I am holding out for a couple more years. It should be a good year with the hunts starting a week later. Last year people with 7 points had a 18% chance to draw unit 21 2nd hunt. I'm sure it will be harder this year. sounds like a fun hunt.

There were lots of elk in higher elevations 76. The quality of elk for older bulls was not there but the numbers were. We all had 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old. The high elevation took it's toll on a couple of us. We were camped at 10,600 and hunting up to about 11,500.

At this point I'm not going to say what deer unit wee are applying for except it is in western Co. We have done our reseach and only applying in 1 unit. If we don't get it we will wait until next year. But with the 11 points we think we will.

Must be in one of those really secret Colorado units that take over 10 points to draw that no-one knows about?   :chuckle:

Yea it sure is so don't apply for with your 12 points and bump us out :chuckle: :chuckle:.

Another thing in the 76 for elk. While we were there had chance to talk with the local gamey and he said that it is managed for quantity not quality.

Can't beat unit 21 in my opinion, but unless you want to pony up the $$ for a landowners tag, the required points keeps going up every year.  Or at least a point every other year.

Also, any of the bookcliffs units are solid.  They can be hit or miss though.

The bookcliffs run from UT into CO or vice-versa, check your maps.
