Too late for Moose?

I was thinking about starting to put in for Wyoming Moose to build up points in hopes to eventually get drawn, but I figured I would ask if it's even worth it so late in the game. I think I saw the max points were at like 9 or 10. I'm not to sure on how the draw works but am pretty sure that max points holders are the ones who get the tags. I'm only 24, do I got a shot at drawing in this lifetime???  Thanks

Here is the breakdown of points coming into the 2010 draw year

FOR NON RESIDENTS   not INCLUDING Residents

39 Thirteen
22 Fourteen

I haven't run the numbers but over time I would think that you should be able to draw something, probably the state with the best odds of drawing a moose tag as a NR would be Idaho though, some units have really good draw odds.

Now to explain this.......75% of all tags go to the person with the most points, and the rest go to the RANDOM draw.  Then X amount of percent goes to Non residents only.   SO.........most units don't even have enough tags in them for a person to have a RANDOM chance at a Non resident tag.   Therefore, you have to have ALL those folks with preference points drawn FIRST before you have a shot at it.   You do the math, how long that will take when there are only so many tags per year and that amount of tags DECREASES every year because of WOLVES.  




ANother way to say it is Wyoming splits 80/20 for residents/non residents.  THen that %20 is split again  75% going to max point holders and %25 going to the random draw.   

Essentially they have to have a unit with 20 permits before ONE is available for a Non-res for the random draw.

Thanks a lot Bone, that was a great way of explaining it. I don't think it's worth going for. That system sucks for the younger guys in my opinion, too bad I didnt start putting in when I was 9 .  Now there are so many people in it I doubt I would ever get drawn ,unless I lived to be 300  . But when there are only so many moose and so many more people wanting to hunt them, thats how it goes.... doesn't help being non-res either.

THere are a lot of fellars on here that think Washington should go to the Preference point system.  I'm sure they really don't realize how it works or how horrible it is as a system.  This SUCKS for the youth and anyone not investing $100 PER YEAR to buy a point.  My bad, moose is ONLY $75.

side note......

There are only 8 units in WY with a RANDOM chance of drawing a Non res tag.   In all of those, THE BEST draw odds are 4%. THE BEST


Wyoming moose tags have been cut %50 in the last 7 years.

JUST last year alone, 114 less moose tags.  (Thanks wolves!)

We need to put these wolves back on the endangered species list, I have heard way too much about our hunting going to sh*t in most of the western states these past few years. Is the population way higher then it was 10 years ago? Sorry if this is a dumb question...

Save the money you'd spend for points each year in the various states and when you got enough $$$ saved, do a trip to AK....

Yeah come up here it is awesome.  I can't wait till Sept.  Just wish I could hunt here in winter instead of unit 20.  Went after some rabbits and saw 4 cows and a calf.  Their not even scared of my snowmachine they just turn around and stare.
