338/375 Ruger
« on: March 20, 2010, 09:46:52 AM »
Does anybody have one of these? I'm waiting on a chamber reamer and headspace gage from PTG. Once it shows up I'm sending it up to Benchmark Barrels to have them cut an 18" barrel for my Savage Striker. Should be pretty cool when it's done. I hope to have the finished gun weigh about 7#. If my estimates are close, this should give me 338 Win Mag performance from a handgun.

The dimensions that I'm having the reamer cut to will keep the same shoulder angle as the 375 Ruger/ 338 RCM case, so I'm just using 338 RCM dies to form the brass. It's a simple one pass sizing operation. Here's a pic :

Left to right: 375 Ruger with 260 Accubond, 338/375 Ruger with 250gr Sierra MK, 300/375 Ruger with 185 Berger VLD, 300 WSM with 180gr SP

The 300/375 Ruger looks pretty interesting as well, maybe a project for another day. I'm getting pretty excited about this project. It's killing me that it's going to take so long though. About 3 more weeks for the reamer, and then however long it takes for the barrel.  :bash:

Before anyone starts with the "what's the point?" comments, I'll say that this was just a fun project. Performance wise I could have gone with the 330 Dakota and got the same results, but I just happen to have a large supply of 375 Ruger brass. Plus the Dakota case would require a lot of work to the feed rails to get it to feed through the magazine of a rifle not designed for it. The 338 Win Mag is a great round, and no I didn't need the extra few FPS that this case will give me. The 338 RUM is also a great round, but needs a longer action. Same goes for the 340 Weatherby and the 338 Edge.

Once the Striker is done, I'll have a rifle barrel made up in the same caliber. Everybody loves a having a rifle and handgun in the same caliber, right? :chuckle:

I'll post updates as the project moves along.

make sure you wear a goalie mask when you touch it off.  Do not want to see a pic of  you with the gun imbedded in your face!  Dang, that thing should be an awesome hand cannon.  Literally.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

I left out an important part of the build. The muzzle bake! I'm having one of Center Shot Rifles' Muscle Brakes installed on there. They are amazingly effective. I'm very tempted to try it without the brake though. Just to say that I did. :o
