Fantastic day at COOKE CANYON
« on: March 25, 2010, 11:31:21 AM »
After reading some posts on HuntWa about Cooke Canyon hunt club I was curious to say the least. I have a yellow lab, Caddis, that will be 12 in July and the only hunting she did this year was a dove shoot on the opener. So I got ahold of Alice and explained that I was looking for an easier hunt for Caddis and I would also be bringing my soon to be 4 yr old son Garric. She had the perfect spot for us.

We arrived at about noon and were greated by Alice, who is absolutly wonderful. I took care of the necc. paperwork and she sent us down to meet her husband Doug. He couldn't have been any friendlier as he and I could have bs'd all afternoon. So off garric, caddis and I go.

I have been hunting pheasants for 33 years now and was completely taken by suprise. This was to be my first time hunting a game farm for birds and was there mainly for Caddis to get some easy retrieving. I totally UNDERESTIMATED these birds and was completely UNDERGUNNED! The birds held tight until Caddis went in for the flush. Before I knew it the birds were up and flying thru tight cover and I was caught off guard and running around trying to get a shot. I had my 11-87 12 ga. with  the mod. choke and 6 shot. I should have had in the full choke and shooting 4's and 5's.
we ended up flushing all 5 roosters and I was lucky to take 2 home. We also saw 1 other rooster and a hen that both outsmarted us.

After the hunt we went back up the the clubhouse to thank our hosts. Alice took Garric and I on a tour of the facility including the kennels and the flight pens. Garric even got a cool hat out of the deal. Garric had an absolute ball and if he thanked me once and said how much fun he had he said it 30 different times.

My only regret is that we found this great place so late in the season. They close for 4 months next week. But we will definatly be back next fall.

A couple more pic's. Here is one happy boy and one tired pup. We barely got out of the driveway before Garric was asleep (wearing his new hat) :)

That sounds like a great day. Way to get your son out in the field. Those memories last forever.

hey so i have noticed that alot of people on here have been going to cooke canyon and i did some research and found another game bird ranch over in ellensburg with a little better prices.  i have never gone to them before or heard anything about them so i dont know if they are as good as cooke canyon.  i have been to cooke canyon a few times and have had a great time every time i have gone but for training my pup i would rather pay a little less and get some more birds.  the name of the ranch is whiskey dick ranch.
