So my wife wants to go Turkey Hunting....
« on: March 25, 2010, 05:45:12 PM »
So my wife wants to go Turkey Hunting. I have never been turkey hunting dont even know where to start. I have the weapons and camo from there I'm lost. So a the few questions I have are. What is a cheap non diaphram call? Do I need to get a blind? How smart are Turkeys? What kind of calling do you do in the spring? I know the season is less than a month away. I have done some reading but, I'm looking for more info. Thanks for any help.
"One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted..If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job." First off, be carefull its addicting.  :chuckle:

I learned to call turkeys with a slate. I still use it to this day for certain occasions. I felt it was the easiest to learn on. Not a steel or glass. I leared real fast that you will want to figure out the diaphram calls. Especially if you hunt alone. Start by scouting. Find out where they roost. You can do that with a locator call. Lots of loctor cals out there (coyote, owl, crow, goose, gobble, slaming your truck door :chuckle:). If you have access to the property by roads start by driving in just after dark. drive slow and locate from the truck after they have roosted. Do not hen call at them. Sometimes its that easy o locate, sometimes its not. Once you find a roost you have just increased your odds. Get them coming off of it in the morning or going up at night. Dont call at them too early, timing is the key off the roost. Decoys are a must too, I dont always use them but very often. I hate blinds, most like them. I am closterphobic. I have learned to sit still.

Are they smart? VERY. They can see like you cant beleive. Sit still.

As far as learing to call. I like the Primos Truth videos. They can teach you alot from that front porch. Practice practice practice. My wife hates me this time of year. I go through a few diaphrams before season starts. While I am driving I even practice.

There is alot more to be learned but that is what I have for you for now. Lots of turkey guys on here. I am sure they will help out.

Make sure you spray your clothes well with tick spray.  See recent postings.  When my wife goes with me, she wears a headnet also.  Have fun, you and your spouse will never look back!   :twocents:
