tying bobber stops
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:47:55 AM »
can anyone please tell me or show me where to find a good set of instructions to tye a bobber stop that does not slip when casting or fall apart after say 5 casts.  been using the pre-done ones where you slip your line through the black plastic tube and slide the string off and tighten, those keep sliding up my line when i cast and eventually fall apart after 5 or so casts, getting real frustrated with them.

thanks in advance,
Steve

Hard to tell, better to show.  Here goes.  Take some waxed dental floss (one foot) and make a loop next to your line(not a knot).  Hold the loop in your left handpressing the loop and your line between your thumb and index finger.  Next take the tail of one end of the loop with your other fingers on your right hand and wrap it through the loop and line 6 times (not letting the line and floss twist around each other).  Finally grab both tails and cinch tight.  Pull pretty hard and then move up your line about an inch and retighten again.  Clip the tails with clippers and your set.  Sorry for a crappy explanation, as it is a piece of cake to show not tell.  You'll never use a premade bobber stop again.

Check your casting method too.  It sounds like you are using a quick, wristy cast like when throwing lures.  A softer, loopy cast that starts at the back will put a lot less torque on those bobber stops.

buy a spool of dacron line and tie them yourself.  they'll hold up a lot better than the string kind you usually get at the store.

i think the very best ones are the little rubber beads that come on wire loops.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I tie my own, but like MtnMuley said, it's easier to show you.
