expoding targets?
« on: March 28, 2010, 04:45:03 PM »
Has anyone tried the tannerite exploding targets? I just bought 20lb of the stuff and it looks cool but have not had the chance to try it yet. I was just seeing if you guys have tried it and how much you have shot at once. The videos on utube are awesome but I am surprised this stuff isnt illegal yet.

We have played with it quite abit.  We have done two cases at once but I think two is the best bang for the buck.  It is pretty cool stuff in fact i need to make a run south for some more.
If it aint broke, dont fix it.

I may be wrong but think it is illegal in Washington. The guy who sells it markets as legal because it is a binary explosives and requires mixing to make it an explosive compound. I would check with local  Police/Sheriff first because they will probably be called when you use it unless you are in a remote area. Just my  :twocents:

Was at the neighbor's house last year. His new neighbor from the west side who moved in the day before was shooting tannerite targets about 200 yds away. He must of mixed up a big batch because the explosions were so powerful the windows on his house were shaking. Really upset his live stock too. I mean they were very loud and could feel it  shock wave when I went outside. We asked them nicely to stop or going someplace remote. They refused. Sheriffs were called and I think they got into trouble with the law.

Would check first.

That is a WAC that only covers target shooting on state owned land.  For target shooting on private property RCW will be the only law that applies.

RCW 70.74.010

Definition of explosive:

(3) The term "explosive" or "explosives" whenever used in this chapter, shall be held to mean and include any chemical compound or mechanical mixture that is commonly used or intended for the purpose of producing an explosion, that contains any oxidizing and combustible units, or other ingredients, in such proportions, quantities or packing, that an ignition by fire, by friction, by concussion, by percussion, or by detonation of any part of the compound or mixture may cause such a sudden generation of highly heated gases that the resultant gaseous pressures are capable of producing destructive effects on contiguous objects or of destroying life or limb. In addition, the term "explosives" shall include all material which is classified as division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, or 1.6 explosives by the United States department of transportation. For the purposes of this chapter small arms ammunition, small arms ammunition primers, smokeless powder not exceeding fifty pounds, and black powder not exceeding five pounds shall not be defined as explosives, unless possessed or used for a purpose inconsistent with small arms use or other lawful purpose.

RCW 77.74.022

License required:

(1) It is unlawful for any person to manufacture, purchase, sell, offer for sale, use, possess, transport, or store any explosive, improvised device, or components that are intended to be assembled into an explosive or improvised device without having a validly issued license from the department of labor and industries, which license has not been revoked or suspended. Violation of this section is a class C felony.

Based on the RCW regarding explosives, I would have to say Tannerite is going to be illegal in Washington for most people.

I would think that if you have to go out of state to buy it, it is probably illegal here. But thats just a guess on my part.  :dunno:

That stuff is a lot of fun. We use to be able to get it from a guy here in Shelton. I guess he no longer sells it cause its illegal to shoot in Washington. I will have to look at the stuff at Cabelas the next time I'm over that way. I never new they had it.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

The tannerite website states that tannerite is legal in all states if you do not have more than that states black powder storage limit. Which to the best of my knowlege is 20 lb in WA. I sure hope I did not break the law. thanks for all your info guys I will have to dig deeper to keep myself out of trouble!!
