7mm-08 ammo
« on: March 31, 2010, 09:45:48 AM »
I got drawn for a spring bear tag and i need some new ammo I have been shooting some old 140 grain Remington soft point loads.  This things are so old that they have a price tag of 13.99 on them.  What loads would you recommend.  I've been told I could get 150 grain bullets but have never seen them.  should I just stick to 140 grain.

the 140's are plenty for bear, its more important to be accurate. Find a load that you and your gun perform well with. My cousin has a 7mm-08 tikka and his gun likes the 139 gr. SST's if I remember correctly.

140 or 150 grain, really doesn't make a difference. Either weight will be fine. In a "premium" type bullet I would tend to go with the lighter bullet, and with a standard "cheap" bullet I'd go heavier. But 10 grains isn't much and as I said it doesn't really make a difference. If it were me I would try to find any load with a bonded bullet such as the Nosler Accubond, or a 100% copper bullet such as the Barnes.

IF your looking at long shots, over 300 yrds, consider the hornady light mag sst. federal has a barnes tsx, would be great for 300 under shots.

For the added recoil from those light magnum hornady's they're not worth it IMO. Those things bump the recoil up to innecessary levels and don't provide much as far as improved results.
Go with a good Barnes or Accubond like Bobcat said...you won't go wrong.

Heck, I have some Rem ammo I purchased 2 yrs ago that were less than 13.99!  Might not be that old.  Like Jackelope said, barnes or accubond would be great.  We've taken bear with a 7-08 with 162 gr btsp hornady's in the Encore.  Worked extremely well.  I think for a non-premium bullet that works fine at the 7-08 velocities, and has great accuracy as well in all my 7's.

has anyone shot the federal fusion ammo?  Picked up one box at wholesale sports in Burlington.  A guy at the gun counter recommended it said he has shot it and liked it very much.

Friend's 300 win seems to like it over all other factory ammo, and the bear he shot last year didn't like it!

Give Hornadys new Superformance a try..   A 139gr GMX(tsx type solid) at 2900fps+.  $26 a box.
