Who Needs A Bugle?? ElkNut !!
« on: February 10, 2008, 09:02:36 PM »

OK, heres the deal guys! Who needs a bugle? I'm going to give away a bugle to you, your son/daughter/wife whoever you feel needs a respectable Bugle! You hunters probably have your own that you cherish, & that's cool, however there's always someone that NEEDS a good bugle! It's a Carlton Mega Grunt Tube. I will add special touches to it such as a Tube Tamer & Black Cloth Tape that will eliminate that plastic ring you get out of most bugle tubes! It will have a camo cover which most will be covered by the needed black tape for best sound quality! It's not as good as the Monarch, (nothing is) but it will call bulls for sure with good TIMELY CALLING!

All you have to do is convince me why you or whoever needs it more than the next guy? Wednesday after 5:00 pm I'll pick the winner!  There's no cost to you, I'll even take care of the shipping!!!
It has a built in external mouth reed if ones have a problem with mouth reeds, but,  that can be easily removed, I'll also throw in a great Rockies mouth diaphragm that is very user friendly!  So come on over & post your thoughts!!!

give it to a kid. he/she'll be hooked for life.
thats my thought. i'd love to have a bugle, but if one was given to, i'd find a kid who'd enjoy it and pass it on down the line.

I would volunteer my kid if you want to give it to a youth.  He doesn't have an elk bugle and he'd love another call to annoy his mother besides the 10 plus duck and goose calls he already has.  He's 15 and wants to go elk hunting with a bow next year.  It would be his first elk hunt and it'd be great if he had your call with him.

I need one.  My selling argument is that I am a poor college student and can not afford one, let alone school books.  Just kidding, I agree, give it to a youth, obviously there are not many on here that I know of, but there are a lot of trustworthy members that have kids that would love it.

Give it to tmike so that when I draw in Oregon this year he can call one in for me!  ;)
He still has an Abe and Son but I haven't seen him blow on it for quite sometime now and I never really liked the sound of them personally. They sound too Generic and perfect everytime to me or maybe too of a manufactured sound.

Just so everyone is clear on the matter, this is not a kids bugle! I just mentioned Sons/Daughters for no special reason. This is a bugle I wouldn't hesitate taking into the woods with me! So it's open to all. If a kid would like this, then let's hear from them! (grin) I think that would be great. They can respond under your personal handle & in their own words, you only have until Wednesday evening! This is one that will be totally "Customized" from off the shelf stuff!

M_ray--That sounds great! Your buddy does have a pretty good bugle there in the Abe&Sons model, those have good sound. He needs to use a mouth reed with it though instead of the External mouth Latex reed that comes with it, that's where the generic sound comes from. All External bugles with built in reeds have that human tone that can be spotted at long or close distances! Get rid of the end piece & you'll be much more realistic in your sounds!

I'll put my name in the hat.  Last year while packing out my elk during archery season, I had my bugle in the pocket of my 100 dollar cabelas fleece pullover.  When I got back to camp my 100 pullover and favorite bugle was gone.  I must have dropped on the way back.  I retraced my route twice with no luck.  I'm sure someone found it cause it was on a main trail.  I've replaced the jacket, but not the call.

Well since you say it is not a "youth" bugle I might as well try my luck.

I've never owned a bugle, let alone an elk call. Mainly because I have been in school, playing sports in high school and now attending college with only one semester left in my graduate studies in wildlife ecology. I have never found the opportunity to get out and track down and call in elk during the rut.  This has been a fascination to me for many years and I am actually thinking of buying a bow and trying my luck at bow hunting elk these next couple years.  I honestly just want an excuse to get out and get closer to bugling bulls, getting a nice bugle would be the start of my expedition. This fall will be the first time I can experience that and planned on picking up a few elk calls.   I would love to learn how to call elk, obviously a person can not just pick up a bugle and learn right away, but with practice I hope someday I would be able to.

My brother could use a bugle. We both got into archery last year for deer. This is going to be our first year for archery elk, we are stoked to call is some monsters. He is expecting him first baby, a boy within the next week or so and in on a very fixed income. He would love to have a good bugle.

I'll say I need one because my Bugle sucks and is very inconsistant.  It may be me, but I think it may be more like a little of both of us.  Reguardless, I will not use that one this year.

Also, I will be Archery hunting in Montana again this year the second week of September as well as here in WA....hopefully with an Any Bull Tag....and a good realiable Bugle will be a must.

And lastly, after 35yrs. of having F'd up teeth I decided to get braces a few months back.  Can't just stick any call in my mouth and expect it to work anymore.   :)  I got a pretty small pallet and most daiphrams do not fit.  The external mouth reed sounds like just the thing I need!

Either way I would still be interested in checking one out if possible.

Thanks for that piece of advise Elknut ... ya last year I ditched the end piece on my Berry bugle and used a Rockey's mouth reed and liked the sound allot better it was the only tube I had so I went with it! But I still plan to be drawn in Oregon since I have 10 points so tmike will need something good and you want to have a hand in my trophy dontchya!  ;)

Well I guess I really need it according to M-ray. I was just thinking yesterday that I needed to cut up some of my condoms to resurrect the old Abe and Son. I'll save the condoms, when can I expect my bugle  :dunno:

Hey Elknut, I could sure use another bugle, I need to start carrying 2 as I seem to get absent minded and lose mine from time to time!  Last year drove couple hours in to hike in spot only to discover no bugle tube.  In a pinch I opened the hood on my cj jeep and yanked of a 2" tube approx. 12" long hanging off the firewall.  Did manage to call in a couple bulls that night, it wasn't the jeep's fault I couldn't close the deal!  So as long as I keep driving the jeep, I guess I'll have a spare, share with someone else.  BAM

You are the Man Elknut!

I would throw my name in the hat as I am just starting into archery elk, but I can afford to buy one and would rather see it go to someone who really needs it.  Especially a young person who really needs the help. :)

well i dont really know how to start this but ill have a try at this...first off i would like to thank you for what you are doing and what you are offering to all of us..... thank you for the bugle....secondly i would like to say that i think i deserve this bugle....see i joined the military 4 years ago and my hunting and fishing life has been on hold because of the work i do. see i have been stuck in central america working with anti-narcotics and migration and decided that the work i was doing down there just wasnt for me so i decided to go to aviation school which would keep me here on the main land. so in late 2006 i got tansfered to southern oregon were i completed a airman apprenticeship program that was held back for 8 months due to breaking my ankle....so after waiting for my ankle to heal and finally getting a second set of orders i finnaly made it to school. great ole' North Carolina, last place on earth i had ever wanted to be. but again another 5 months finishing my School there and i was off again. see alot of moving is expensive, but moving from West coast to the east coast and then back is Rediculously expensive. sort of put me and my wife in hardship for about 4 months but now its been a full 6months here and we are getting back on our feet. but good luck has come to being stationed here at home, well close to home. could have been the best thing for me and my wife. theres nothing better than frienhds and family and that is who we like to contain our selves around....but with all that said being here and being there the most that i have been able to do is take a week to two weeks off for hunting. see i only took time for deer hunting because of my irregular schedule and everything that i use to do as a young child that my dad raised me up doing has pritty much gone away because of my work. i use to do everything with my father...see i have been lucky lately to get the time off i could because it use to be that i was just out there in the woods with my dad....it was our bonding time and now it has become something more to me....it has become a second life, my passion. something that me myself enjoy doing more than life itself....i dont honestly know what i would do with out deer hunting....but now that i grow older my father changes his course and has consentrated more on Elk.  and now that i have been so lucky to have just recently been stationed here in washington(back home) i plan to do my usual deer hunting but have plans this year to devote time towards learning how to elk hunt, to learn what my father does, and hope that as my dad sees and loves elk hunting that it will soon someday mean the same to me as hunting deer does also...... so this year like i said before i am planning on hunting elk for the first time with my father and think that it would be oftly neat if i could get this bugle and learn how to call so that i could impress my father and install that smile on his face that i love seeing every year i get a deer....but hopefully this time it will be the elk that my father helps me get with the call that i get from you....This is the reason i feel that i deserve this call.......again thank you............AJ

Coasthunterjay, you obviously are a "do it yourself man", and giving you a freebie would just ruin this and your story. Think how better your story would end, if you bought yourself a bugle, that you used it to call in your dad's elk!!! All on your own! Wow, wouldn't that be cool!!!???

Besides, you wouldn't want to take this bugle from some kid would you?  :chuckle:

Tried to get my daughter to post on here, but she kept telling me we could just go buy one too.  She also said, "You have to do the calling Dad, I want to shoot."  Man do I love hearing her say that!  Now if she can just get her grades up so she can hunt...... but that is a whole 'nother story. >:(

Sounds like school is tough on some here! Hang in there it's worth it in the long haul! I ended up taking a GED test & getting my diploma that way, worked for me but it's not for everyone!

The response here is overwhelming!!!! I only have one bugle though, what a dilemma???? I'm thinking of throwing in some CDs here, how about Vol-1 of our Set Bugling Bulls & Beyond? It will show you what elk sounds mean what & when to use them & what situations you'll hear them in, hey it's a good start. If you own any kind of elk call it would be nice to know when it's most effective!

Todays Wednesday, I'll pick a winner/winners!! I'll post a new thread for that & what I decide! Thank You all so much!!

I guess I'll throw myself into the mix.  Here's my story.  Since my father past away about 6 years ago and was my hunting partner I had gotten away from the hunting for about 5 of those years.  He was a ruff and tough kind of hunter that never used calls and taught us boys that persistence was key.  Last year my brother and 2 sons decided it was time for us to break out of our shells and honor our dad/grandfather and get back to doing what we loved most.  Being in the outdoors.  So I started accumulating hunting equipment and gear again.  My brother and me decided that we would not only hunt the way our dad taught us but to also add in some extra tactics to the hunt.  We thought we would try to use calls but have had very limited success.  I am doing most of the calling and my brother is taking pictures as he likes to do more than hunt.  We are just starting with using calls.  I got a doe bleat call from my son this Christmas to start working on.  I myself had only bought a turkey diaphragm to practice with when we decided to start using calls.  I have a teenage daughter that is a "A" student and driving so a lot of my expenses go out to her so she doesn't have to work and can focus on her education and hopefully get a college scholarship next year.  I have found it tough to afford my hunting toys but am saving my loose change to help with the expense.  I would love to have an elk call to add to my gear collection and to practice with as we are going to try and get an elk this year.  By the way, none of us have ever shot one.  Just my dad.
Like everyone else has said, thanks Elknut1 for offering someone a chance at using a tool to enhance their outdoor hunting experience.  Very generous of you.
