Got drawn for bear, looking for prices.

  Been lurking in the shadows for awhile,  First time user.  I got drawn for spring bear,  and really want a rug done.  Looking for a basic price on how much to have one complete.  Also any skinning tips that will help me to ready the cape.

As far as prices for Rugs go it really depends on the taxidermist that you use.  I have seen prices anywhere from $125 - $200 per L/F.

I charge $150 per L/F for my Black Bear Rugs.

A good basic price on a rug is going to run anywheres from 125.00 to 175.00 a foot.

I charge 125.00 a foot on a black bear rug. It is double padded, double felt and all sewn. That is one of the things that I cannot stress enough to you, whomever you choose make sure that it is sewn and not glued. Some taxidermists glue their felt on and over time it will come off.

As for skinning tips there are a lot of pictures and info on a google search that will help you.

But basically if you start with the bear on it's back make a straight cut from the ahole all the way up the just above center of chest. Then cut straight across upper arms to teh pad and peel them out this will give you a T cut and this will make sure that the skin stays in the right spots. Alot of people make a Y cut and this takes the armpit and puts it on top of the shoulder.

On the back legs a straight line from the Ahole to the back of the pad will allow the leg to lay out naturally leaving the buttocks in place. This will allow a taxidermist to make the overall appearance of your bear more presentable and not a square.

This is a good website to look over, I do not recommend you skinning out the pads and turning the eyes, ears, lips and nose, however it does give you some good pictures on what to visualize. Most taxidermists prefer to do that themselves.

I saw where that is linear foot ? so you figure $750-$1050 for a 6 foot bear ?
Or is it square foot ?

Rugs are done by linear foot. Tip of nose to base of tail. So a 6 foot bear for me to complete would be 750.00 +tax.

 Most of the taxidermists on here Will do you right. I would  (As always) recommend visiting your taxidermist and get prices before the hunt. Deciding what type of mount and who to use when your standing over your bear is a bad idea.

That would be me..
But due to the 2 extra weeks they added to my permit...
The fact that I live in unit and can hunt  every day (unemployed)....
I know where I saw one last year and have been scouting/hunting up in unit for 3 years......
I am not shy about asking for help......(BTKR, Adnahoundsman..etc (hint,hint)
Am not picky about age/size (smaller I will be able to afford).......
How can I not be pretty confident that i stand at least a 10% chance ?
Plus I need to budget how much I need to save , just in case....
