Chased a wolf today
« on: April 03, 2010, 06:06:31 PM »
I come upon this doe and last year’s fawn and a wolf was after them, they just hit the road so I pulled up within 25 ft and the wolf just kind of stood there lookin at me, the doe’s tongue was hangin and so was the fawns. I hit the ditch and jumped out, I think  the doe thought she had help cause she took off after the wolf and for a while there we were chasing the wolf together but then she pulled ahead n when I came down over this little ridge that drops down into this little bowl and I could see the doe and fawn, but no wolf so I just kept dropping down and pretty soon the wolf loped out of the brush below where the deer were.  So I headed right after him he acted like he really didn’t know what to do , kind of loped around me looking and then he headed for Mountainman1 outfit. NO gun, No Camera, but the doe was real happy to see me. I called Mountainman1 and told him what had happened and that maybe he could get a shot at him. With the camera of course ;)

It was fun as hell, I was real mad when I took off after it, and was real surprised how the doe acted, it was like we were on the same team, which of course we are. But it was kind of cool to actually see it happen that way. might have turned out different if there would have been more than one wolf as it really wasn't scared of me.

Twisp-Carlton RD, this wolf was real light colored and kind of shaggy.

They have those cameras that mount to the barrel of your rifle.  Remember to turn it on next time and get a good shot.   :chuckle: :chuckle:

Too bad you didn't chase it with some "lead"!  Still, good job on possibly saving that doe or her yearling; hopefully they cleared out of there before the wolf circled back on their trail.  S.S.S. and WA wildlife won't end up meeting the same fate as the wildlife in MT and ID. :hunter:

I took the my wife's rig to town no guns in there, just briefly, I thought about diving over the bank and trying to take it out with the car, but rejected the idea. Thinking of what the sheriff would say about one dead wolf and a totaled car. ;)

That was cool Wolfbait!
I've had one similar situation in the wild with a deer and coyote but most often it is with my own sheep, goats, and chickens. When I have a coyote, bobcat, or raccoon after my animals, the sheep will be looking back at the house for me to come out and rescue them. The chickens are the alarm and that is when I grab the 22 and head out the door. The sheep will then file in behind me as I go after the predator. The chickens will hide as best as possible and only come out when they feel it is safe which is usually after a gun shot. Then most of them get brave. I've had a couple roosters that would go up to the animal I shot and they would spur it as if they are showing it who is boss. I get such a kick out of those times.

Even an unfriendly goat or sheep will get closer after such an occurrence.

Especially when the rig is 700 yards from the road....   :chuckle: Once you commit to going off road to take on that endeavor ---- well, I guess you are committed.

Wolf bait  I thought you were an upstanding redneck! what the hell are you doing unarmed? i must say i'm very disapointed!  :( At the very least you should be carrying a 12 gauge with those bean bag rounds! just cause you can't kill 'em don't mean you can't harass em....  :bash: Why does every one else have all the luck!

I had a buddy that wrecked his 3/4 ton chev chasing a cat into the ditch... he got the cat... And he did the whole thing with his lady at his side and she NEVER said a word!
