One of Five Tucannon Tags
« on: April 04, 2010, 07:06:57 AM »
I drew one of the five Tucannon tags and am really looking forward to this hunt.

This will be my first time into the Tucannon River drainage so any hints on road conditions, snow level, or where to start would be much appreciated.

I have back packed into the Wenaha Wilderness before and really enjoyed the country.  I think that Tucannon will be a great place to spend some time this spring!

You will have a fantastic hunt as spring bear hunting is about as good as it gets in my opinion. You will need to make sure of the unit boundaries but I am pretty sure that east of the Kendall Skyline Drive is the Tucannon Unit. My suggestion is for you to drive up that road from Dayton (go south on the North Fork of the Touchet Rd. then head east on Hatley Gulch Rd. on up to Skyline). Once you get into the National Forest you can start glassing to the east. I think one of the better places for you to focus would be out the 4610 Rd past San Souci Spring and out toward Tallow Flat. There is quite a bit of country out there that should have bears. The snow will likely keep you out of there for a while yet. I did a hike yesterday in the Dayton Unit (see my thread for a photo) and there was still lots of snow. Good hunting, Rufous.

This should be a great year for you guys that draw in the Blues. I know that there is still some snow but nothing like the last couple years. As hard as it would be to stay home on the opener I probably wouldn't go over till the first part of May. Unless of course you can hunt every weekend. Good luck. I look forward to hearing your hunting stories and seeing some field photos.

Elk Stuffer,
Thanks for the words of encouragement. This will be my first bear hunt in the Blues, and I am glad to have drawn on what looks to be a good year!  We have a family trip planned to Pullman on opening day and I will get to spend one full day hunting/scouting on the way back from Pullman.  It will mostly be a scouting trip since I will have our whole family in the truck.

Rufous,
Thanks for the great information to get us started.  When I get back from our trip on the opener, I will make another post with the snow levels and road conditions.

Good luck!
