Anyone Interested?
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:29:05 AM »
I'll start by saying hello and thanking everyone for the wealth of information and enjoyment I have received from your posts.  I am in a situation and looking for a little help.  I am a SSG currently deployed to Afghanistan.  I will return to Fort Lewis towards the end of July.  Leaving me little to no time for scouting for archery season.  Is anyone willing to let me tag along on their Westside hunt?  I hunted elk and deer the first 2 years I was at Lewis harvesting deer both years but no luck with the elk.  This will be my last season in Washington since I have received recruiting orders.  I really want the chance to harvest an elk or even have a close encounter with one before I leave.  Cow or Bull, doesn't matter to me.  Either would be a trophy for my first archery elk.

my nephew is over there, also and from Fort Lewis.  He is coming back in July as well.  Are you part of one of the Stryker units?

If I used a bow and arrow, you would be welcome, but I am a rifle hunter.

Thank you for your service.  It is appreciated greatly.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Yes, we are on Strykers.  I'm a Section leader in a scout platoon attached to 2-1 Infantry.  I'm looking forward to hunting something that doesn't shoot back.

I'm not sure what my plans are for elk season (whether I will hunt archery or muzzleloader, or where I will do so).  However, I am more then happy to tell you exactly where I've gotten into elk every day I hunted during the last 2 archery elk seasons.  PM me if interested.

Thats O.K., last year I saw 78 elk in 6 days of hunting, had one at 16 feet, and another time at 20 yards, the only reason I didnt fill my tag last year is because I am a *censored* !!
I am happy with where I hunt.
P.S. I hunt Trad Archery only....

You ever try to hide from an elk as it is walking towards you ?
I ducked BEHIND a bush, and had no shot because the elk was looking right at me and I couldn't move..
The other one I messed up was because I thought I heard it moving away from me, so I tried to move with it and walked right into the middle of the herd.  :bash:
I got caught several times by surprise because these Roosevelts are pretty quiet compaired to the Rocky's I am used to chasing, I also had a few problems getting within 30 yards (my confort range with my recurve) due to the fact I am not so quiet in the coastal jungle.......
I also saw a lot on the other side of the drainage I was in through my Bino's.
Then there was the herd of 15 that I would see after parking at a gate, walking in about a half mile, then following them BACK to where they crossed the road 50 yards from the gate !!  :bash:

The closest I've been was about 30 yards and he busted me on the draw.  I waited too long, and I wasn't in the right spot.  Sometimes everything happens so quick.  Lesson learned.  Hopefully this year is better for the both of us.

Last year I was hunting alone, so I only hiked into unit about 3 miles (5 different gates) ; but this year I have a couple other guys coming down, 1 has a boat, so we will probably be checking out Long Island also...
We are planning on making a couple trips this summer and scouting, plus I have 3 locations that I want to build stands/blinds, so one way or another, it will be a great season....

Hey brother...be safe and hurry home!

Ive only hunted elk 2 seasons in Western WA.

but took a 5x5 bull with a bow both years...  2007 on day 3 (one yard shot)   and 2009 45mins into opening day (52 yard shot)

I use lots of techniques and many arent considered traditional for elk but I dont think the elk mind!

I live in Lacey off exit 111 near Walmart/Home Depot/ ect

many more experienced guys on here than me...
Ive never seen 75 elk in 6 days in my hunting areas...
I cant promise anything...

but you can PM me if ya dont get a better offer...although STIKNSTRINGBOW may already have me beat but for location... :dunno:

if ya dont have any issues with hunting with a Captain then we will try to get ya on one!

I tried to look around there, but could not find access due to WH closing everything down (early season)
