S&W 329pd scandium 44
« on: May 15, 2010, 08:39:51 PM »
Does anybody have one of these? I'm seriously thinking about getting one to replace my Ti Tracker 41 Mag that I just sold. I liked the Tracker a lot, but I just didn't like the ports. If the 357 PD (scandium 41 mag) were still being made, I'd go that route. But I believe it's been discontinued.

I know someone who has one. His son told me the recoil from it made his hand bleed...tore the skin between his thumb and fore finger.
I was thinking about one. I don't mind a little recoil but I don't want it to make me bleed.

yeah if you are going scandium i would not go over 357 just to much recoil. to light of frame to much snort. i would put up with the little heavier and you will be happy you did.

I have one...pleasure to carry. I got mine for backpacking in bear country (alaska) thats the good part.  The bad part is shooting it reminds me of hitting a baseball in the cold and getting bee's in your hands.  Its a great gun if you just want something that's light to carry and dont plan on shooting it often or ever.  I always imagine that if a bear is trying to eat me I wont care what its like to shoot. :twocents:

I don't mind a little recoil either, I have a 45/70 BFR that launches 440gr slugs at 1650fps ;). Or much worse are the 300gr at 1825fps. That load is snappy! At the same time, I do like to shoot my guns. The 41 mag only weighed 25oz, and was fun to shoot with any load, even the 250gr cast bullets at 1100fps (that's about as fast as they were going to get out of that 4" barrel. But the ports made is so loud that I had to wear double hearing protection. If I shot it with just ear plugs in, it would still ring my ears pretty good.

WDFW-sux, how is the fit and finish on your 329? My Taurus wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't a work of art. There were some tooling marks, and the lockup wasn't as tight as I would have liked it to be. But when I bought it, there was nothing similar available. Then a little while later, S&W came out with the scandium frame big bores.

If recoil is that much of an issue just shoot specials and/or get a shooting glove.

I had a Taurus 608, 8 shot .357 with a 4in ported bbl.  It was the first and will be the last ported handgun I'll ever own. My ears hurt to remember it. Didn't hold up well either. I've heard a lot of complaints about recoil with the Scandium guns. Also consider that the really hot Bear stoppers from Buffalo Bore or Garrett can't be safely shot from one. Buffalo Bore flat out says NO.

There's been a lot of talk as to what God did on Day 8, I say he made the S&W 629Classic.. :chuckle: :stirthepot:

Everything about the gun is great until you pull the trigger. It has rosewood grips and the trigger is perfect lock up is great.  Its a really nice revolver if it wasn't nice it wouldnt be in my safe.  Everyone wants to buy it from me  until they shoot it..the gun even bruised my uncles hand :chuckle:

The two loads that Ive shot in it are the 300gr cast core federal premiums and the 270 gr speer gold dots...they are equally bad.

I've never shot lighter loads in it I assume they would be OK....Im not much into target pistol shooting so the gun is perfect for what I want.  Like I said its the bast carrying 44mag out there and thats what I wanted. :twocents:

have you thought about a ruger blackhawk in .45 colt? with a 4 5/8" barrel the only weigh 36 oz. and with buffalo bore or cor bon ammo you can get heavily loaded ammo that rivels most 44 mag ammo. :twocents:

I had a 5.5" Blackhawk Convertible in 45 Colt for a while and I really liked it. But it got traded towards a 300wsm Savage Striker, which I like more :chuckle:

All I'm trying to do here, is get a 4" barreld revolver to carry as a secondary weapon when I'm out and about to compliment whichever rifle I have with me. For example, if the rifle is a 204 Ruger, I'll carry the 45/70 BFR; if the rifle is the Savage 99 in 300 Savage I might carry the 10mm; if it's the 375 Ruger, I'll carry a 22lr. It's all about a balanced pair ;). Plus, a 4" barreled revolver of moderate caliber would work well as a primary weapon if I wanted to travel light.

Right now I have it narrowed down to either the S&W 329pd, or a 4" Redhawk in 45 Colt. The Smith is half the wieght, but costs about 40% more. The Ruger is heavier, but I can have TK Custom machine the cylinder to take moon clips so I can shoot 45acp as well. I'm leaning towards the 329pd, so if anyone has a used one that they would like to sell at a reasonable price (WDFW-SUX  ;)) I might be interested. I'm not in any real hurry though, so I'll probably just wait until the right deal pops up.

Id sell it but it cost too much to begin with. When I ordered it after they first came out and it cost 900+ The other reason I cant sell is the next time I was in a tent thinking I was hearing a man eater I'd have nothing to cuddle with.

Besides I like it. Especially since I dont shoot it. :chuckle:

Everyone who fondles it says it feels like a pellet gun.

The price is part of what's holding me back from buying a new one. $950 is the best price I've found yet. I just know that as soon as I cough up the cash I'll find a used one with only one cylinders worth fired out of it for a fraction of the price.
