Tampico and Cowichie
« on: April 04, 2010, 11:11:24 PM »
I'm a relatively new hunter (spring turkeys last year were my first hunting experience and I was skunked) and grew up in Yakima although I now live on the west side. I need to be in Yakima on the 14th and 15th this month and wondered if there are birds in Tampico or Cowichie. I'm able to do some scouting early this week and am curious if people have harvested any there in the last couple years and if so, what guidance could be obtained for hunting these areas??

Up above Cle Elum seemed a little densely populated last year with other hunters and frankly it made me a little bit nervous. I'm very open to suggestions.

good luck. They are pretty few and far between. More hunters than birds...no joke. But there are a few.

Don't waste your time.......huge winter kill up there 2 years back and the birds have'nt taken hold since.....I know people who live up there who have'nt seen a bird for 5 years or so....talked to a biologist a year or too back and he said there was only 15 turkeys in the whole unit......wenas might be a way better option, that's where I have several groups found and where I'll be on the 15th

I agree on the wenas being a much better location for finding turkeys. I've never seen one in the tampico area before.

Excellent, thank you for the tips it is very much appreciated!

Without asking for your prime spots do you have any encouragement for where to do a little shock calling around Wenas to locate a few birds between now and the 15th? I haven't been up there since I was trout fishing for browns at the lake when I was 12 and that's been almost 23 years.

The wenas area gets flat hammered by hunters :yike:  I hunted it last year on opening day hoping to stay closer to home and man oh man it was scary. Peacock calls coyote howlers and anything else people could blow on.  I killed a bird but it was a long day and a lot of miles.
