New Anti-Bark Collar Topic

A friend is having some problems with her 1 year old Germ Shep barking.  Only a problem when she's gone, when someone knocks on the door, when the dog is in the backyard by herself (she hears the neighbor and neighbor's dog), etc.  Anyway, she wants an anti-bark collar to get her to mind, when she's gone and when she wants to train her.  Btw, she is going to have her trained in about six months for guarding.  In fact, her previous Germ Shep passed away recently and was fully trained to guard/attack, so she's familiar with handling a family dog that's trained to guard/attack.  There's a lot of choices out there, so here's the question: What features are most important for her to get?  Can she get a good unit for $50 - $75 (cost is important to her, but she'll go $100, if necessary)?  I'll let her know about this thread after posting it, so she'll be reading what you have to say.

I would only buy the tri-tronics bark limiter, hands down the best on the market and goes for $99.

Any dog trained properly for schutzhund will not bark until commanded to bark. Hopefully, her schutzhund trainer has a clue. I've been told there are a few new so called "trainers" in the Skagit / Whatcom area who don't know how to train a dog to sit let alone train a dog to attack on command yet, they are training "clients" dogs for them?

I wouldn't pay a novice to train my duck dog. I'm definately not going to pay or allow someone to create a huge liability of a trained attack dog just because they talk a good game about how much experience they have or they've spent a couple weekends working with a pro.

Just sayin'....at one year old, if a German Shepard is going to be a trained attack/guard dog(Schutzhund) if the "trainer" knows ANYTHING about what they are doing, the dog will not have a barking problem.

She's crazy if she's paying a trainer and they don't have the vocalization training completed by this time or, she's getting a big huge liability of an improperly trained attack dog by a novice trainer....

Another important consideration on attack/schutzhund dogs- if they bite someone, your insurance company finds out they have had a single day of schutzhund training and you have not disclosed this to your agency, all of your coverage can sometimes be instantly cancelled.

I've read and heard the same.  My guy currently (knock on wood) doesn't need one but I do have a TriTronics E-collar and it is top notch.

I too recommend Tri Tronics.  Great tools, and they are the only ones I am aware of that are made in the USA.

Happy Gilmore, the dog is not trained yet except for basic obedience training.  Exactly how old the dog is, I'm not sure, but it's no more than a year.  I mentioned in my post that her other dog was trained to guard/attack which is incorrect.  She was trained for protection which is part of Schutzhund - my bad on this.  If you have suggestions on good trainers she should seek out, PM me with info and I'll pass it on -- the closer to the Olympia, WA area the better, but she'll take her further.  Her other Germ Shep came from Germany and was trained there.  The commands were in German, as well.  She said she was perfect in her attention and following commands.  Her boyfriend and her son decided to test her one day (my friend didn't know about it until after it happened) ... boyfriend got in the trees by the house and called the son on his cellphone to come out with the dog ... boyfriend made noise in the trees to get the dogs attention ... she stayed by her son until he gave the command and she went after the boyfriend ... luckily the son was able to call her off before she got to the boyfriend (after he fell down trying to run away) ... scared the cr** out of the boyfriend ... very arrogant boyfriend's do very stupid things sometimes ... he did buy the dog, so I guess he knows that he got his money's worth.

I bought the cabelas brand collar came recommended to me and it worked great.  It was one that builds up stimulation and worked really well

I kinda got to wonder what kind of effect an anti-bark collar will have on a dog who's training will consist of barking at times...does that make sense? I've got absolutely zero experience training security or guard dogs and only a little bit more experience training dogs in general so bear with me...but if a dog gets used to getting zapped for barking then you train him to bark when the time is right...my mind tells me you're gonna have a hard time with that.

Here is a web site that has some stuff but I am not a pro on it. I only want to stop the barking in our neighborhood. It is extremely rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hounds are a good example, they bark at game, heck allot of them bark because it fun!    But the second I put my bark collars on my hounds, they don't make a peep, even if the cat walks by.  I only used it when I left the property, they were nice and quiet.  At night I always locked mine in their kennels so they didn't wear it at night. If left on too long the bark collars will cause two small sores where the prongs touch their neck.  I would imagine the shepherd would wear the collar when they didn't want it barking, ie when they were gone and take the collar off when they wanted to be alerted to someone's presence.

I use the Dogtra Yapper Stopper. It works great and holds a charge for several weeks. I think I paid around $75.
