Slate, very versatile, easy to use. There are a lot of different ones out there, glass, aluminum, slate. just find one that works for you.

On your other question about any tips. If you are already finding birds then half the battle is won. Put them to bed the night before, get on them before light, set up about a 100 yards away and listen to what they are doing, and be patient, I have had birds come running in to a decoy, and I have sat there for three hours before I could get one to come in.

Have fun, learn from it and be safe.

If you're just starting out.....go with the pot call( Slate) they come in many different types and can be learned rather quickly, may look to buying a couple different strikers( pegs) that way it can turn one call into many.

I purchased one only a few weeks before I called in the one my son shot, his first turkey and the first one I'd ever called in.

I carry glass, ceramic, and aluminum pot calls and several strikers.  Diaphragms are always in play, and nothing beats a good box call for cutting.  I use cutting to locate mid-day while "running and gunning", as they say, (covering ground, doing set-ups & locating just as you would hunting elk).

Agree with the above comments that a slate (pot) call is easiest to learn and you only need to worry about a putt, cluck, and purr to get you started.  Turkeys make a lot of different vocalizations but these are the bread and butter hen sounds that can/will attract gobblers.  Conservative calling will serve you best if you're not well-read on turkey behavior.

Good luck!

Small to mid size Box call. Get one that works wet and does not need chalk.

No parts to lose, no striker to lose. No need to sand or scuff up mid day...

You can work it with two hands, or with one hand on the ground next to your leg as a bird works his way in...try that with a pot call, not so easy...

X2  :yeah: Box calls are easier than pot calls. A box call will make any call you want to make, even gobbles. If it's wet out, put the box call in a bread bag. ;)

a copy of Gobble gobble gobble by Roy Orbison   Actually we do not hunt them but there are about 3500 of them on the ranch where we hunt Whitetails.  Do they taste like real turkey??

I've found when most calls don't work, I pull out my boat paddle box call. They seem to work when most won't.

now that I have them pretty well figured out I won't hunt without my diaphram calls...
If you're new and wanted my input, I'd figure out how to use them 1st.
