49 spring bear
« on: April 07, 2010, 02:42:24 PM »
i was lucky and drew a spring tag for the 49 unit this year. with only 2 points :IBCOOL:
i have been talking to everyone i know and asking for clues and have some good ideas, but if anyone is out and about and starts seein lots of bears can you post up? i am going to be hitting it hard every weekend of the season and am planning to take a few days from work if i start seeing lots of bears. likewise if anyone else has this tag post here and i will help out all i can if i find a lot of bears.
i really want a color phase... and with my bow. but the ol' 7 will be out with me if i cant close the deal with my bow.
only a week and a half to go!

I have one of the tags too.  Not too sure where to start, we spent over a month the last two seasons chasing moose in 49 and never saw a bear.  I saw 14 (1 grizz) the year I hunted moose in the Selkirks... but nothing in 49.

I think the ski slopes would be good, but they're all north facing and at the highest point, so not sure if they'll be melted out and green next month or not?  Saw a couple other places that looked good for spring bears, but never saw any while moose hunting, so...?

Oh well, it's a good excuse to get out and screw around in the spring!  If I run across anything promising I'll let you know.

Good luck!

I drew there acouple of years ago but I never not into my favorite spot until the last day of the season because of snow. I was seeing alot of sign last spring around power lake, winchester creek area. I have shot 3 fall bears in 3 years in that unit and out of the 10 to 15 bears I see every fall I have only seen 3 color bears and they were all chocolate. good luck hope you kill a biggy

I was up there yesterday (Just east of Chewelah on FS land). Didn't see any bear sign. Went up to snow level and didn't see any sign. No green up yet in the areas that I had covered. Lots of folks cutting firewood however.
