"henned up"

Well, spent the weekend in the NE - saw quite a few birds and they were pretty well "henned up" and well scattered out.  Seemed like they were just really starting to move up higher, but the winter flocks are definitely broken up.  Jakes are seperated out and running in their usual groups (saw one flock or 13 jakes and another of 7 - no hens with them at all)  Birds were not responding to calls at all in my area (I don't call very much anyway ) but they would respond to shock calls and I must admit the 13 jakes were pretty impressive when they all went off at once. Roads are in good shape for the most part, and were in fact very dusty down low.  Should be a good hunt for those who know what they're doing and with the high population of jakes everyone should have some fun.  Good Luck to all!!

We found the same things a couple weeks ago except the winter flocks were not broken up at all.  Saw groups of 75+ birds with 15+ toms in them and they were still hanging out together.

Funny that's what the other 200 guys scouting said as well.  We are our own worst enemies.  Doesn't matter how "little" you call your making it that much harder on yourself and everyone else when you call in the spring, same thing or more with shock calls.

I agree.  If we hadn't been hunting the Youth Season I wouldn't have been calling at all.

Well, I agree to a point.  Those who wander into the woods yelping like crazy every hundred yards or so, or park and run off several strings of yelps at the flocks certainly do no one any favors.  To me, a little calling is when you are isolated, with no birds in sight and give a few clucks and a yelp or two.  Shock calling, to me, is when you start your rig back up!!!  I've been hunting that area since the early 90's and have consistently taken all the birds I'm allowed ( if I choose to-last year I took one big tom and left it at that) so I suspect I'm not penalizing myself to much.  Actually, I don't care to much for the excessive wandering around I see before the hunt. Year after year I find the birds in the "usual spots" and don't find any need to go walking around out there breaking the flocks up a few days before the hunt.

Not all hens squeal at the same time..so if you have a bunch of hens hit that squeal and that Tom will single you out looking for some action..Squeal em if you got em!
