New to rifle reloading
« on: April 19, 2010, 11:10:25 PM »
So I've been researching and came up with  for my '06 and have used 150 CT Silvertip for mulies in Oregon, just trying to get a feel for what people like being my first reloads.  We usally use either 150's out there from different brands.  Just want to know if I'm going down a good road or should I look up to the 165's?  Thanks for the help.

you will do fine with the 150 its all about shot placement 150 or 165 will kill them the same. i load the ct's in my 25-06 7mm-08 and 300 win mag. i also load them for my cosuin in his 308. they are a good bullet and you will do just fine with them and if your rifle shoot them well i would stick with them.

i go with what ever i can get the best accuracy with. in my 300 its 200gr accubonds, that's just what it likes to shoot. i did pretty good with 168 ttxs but the accubonds were better even tho they were heavier than i thought i wanted. shot my blacktail last year with um and it was the same size hole as the 168's made the year before  :dunno:

Addictive that reloading stuff.  Starts with one bullet weight and brand and pretty soon you'll have boxes of different bullets and powders.  I like the 165 grain bullet for the 06.  You can push it to around 3000fps which isn't too shabby, just pick a quality bullet that is the most accurate in your rifle (trial and error)and your set. :twocents:

I have loaded the Sierra's 165 gr. spitzer boat tail for years and can cover 3 shots with a quarter at 100 yards.  i love the 165gr because I feel it works well for both elk and deer.  That said, with some of the newer bullets out now I am experimenting again.

I am fairly new to reloading and have found it to be fun, very detail oriented. I don't do the -06 but I have a few buddies who do and they all seem to like the 165's to 180.
Never, ever let Creed hold you baby, it will ruin it and you will have to get another.

I've had the best luck with IMR 4350 and 165's of a variety of manufaturers in several different -06's.

I've done very well with Sierra 180gr Boat-Tails using IMR4350. Tried lighter bullets but this particular Mauser loves the 180's so that's what I use. Elk and Deer...

Good luck!

Ditto on others comments, reloading is fun and addictive.  Need to set accuracy goals and stop when reached or you will be buying more kitchen sinks then you realize.  Some people are never satisfied and spend too much time on bench theory and never put time into field practice.  My Tikka T3 liked both 168's and 180's.
