Never killed one so take it or leave it, but here's what I've learned over many years hunting  :bash: easterns in western WA:

1. Hunt sign and don't expect to see birds (think blacktails)
2. Call conservatively but reach out there with your yelping, then as time passes use softer purrs, yelps, and clucks on occassion
3. Don't expect a loud mouth Tom to gobble all the way in; they come in silent a lot
4. Enjoy looking at your decoys because they may be the only turkeys you see ;)

I think you have learned the ways of these Easterns pretty well.  It's at that point that one actually swing the odds in your favor of killing one.  Without adhering to the above points, you're just spending time in the woods.

Glad to have your validation Wacenturion because I know that you know a thing or two about turkey hunting.

I did call in one monster Tom to arm's reach one morning (see point 3) and only knew it when I stood up to head into work.  He erupted from the salal as I filled my shorts  :bash:  How he got that close without me knowing is still a mystery.

I sure wish I had the time to get away on a weekday.
I am going down this weekend or next to scout for a day.
My fishing trip for springers was cancelled so I have a couple of open dates to scout.
Gathering is easy. Hunting is a challenge.

Hunted Easterns in Eastern Tennessee last year near Smokey Mountain National Park.  Talk about phantoms.  We never heard or saw a gobbler but saw lots of sign.  Those ridge runners are smart!

But never give up, this year I am headed to Western Kentucky in early May to give er another try!!

Good luck with the wetside mystery birds!!
