.300 wsm bullets
« on: February 15, 2008, 05:23:14 PM »
hello all,
i must say that i read the .300 win mag loads and was fascinated at people knowledge. so my question is. are the same bullets available for .300 wsm. this will be my first year hunting, got a cougar bear deer and elk tag. i would like some advice on what would be best for store bought ammo. as i do not make my own. so my question is if you where to walk into sportsman, what would you look for, im kinda leary of asking at the counter cause they always run to the most expensive stuff. advice is always appreciated. not sure if it matters but i bought a tikka t3 lite .300 wsm, incase some bullets work beter in other guns
thank you
jim

I've got the same gun.  I shoot Winchester's 180 grain Accubond.  My gun loves this bullet.  Shot one inch groups out of the box at 100 yards.  I now have it tuned in at 300 yards.  It's killed a wolf, caribou and a moose.  Taking it to Alaska again this year.

They are both .308 caliber so evey bullet will fit.  The only problem if ever is some of the .303 stuff and it will shoot but just not very accurate.  Casing is the only difference.

Are you talking about 303 caliber which is .310-.312?

Yes, mainly towards surplus bullets.  They will shoot but are not at all intended for a .308 bore.  Again some of it.  All will shoot some worse then others pressure can/will be higher.

heyharris, Stick with rounds made for your gun I doubt you will find any surplus ammo made for the 300WSM, if you do not reload. Here is a list from Midway usa for reference

I just checked out that web site and Sportsman Warehouse is less expensive on the Winchester's.  I also tried the Fusion and Federal but hands down my Tikka liked the Winchester Accubond.  I never tried anything but 180 grain so the 150 grain may be a different story.  Shoot me a pm if you find something different that you like.

I thought he was talking bullets not catridges?  No you can not find WSM's as surplus.  Be willing to try more then one factory load/bullet.  Hopefully cheap base ammo works in your gun and will kill very well.  If it does not shoot well try something else.

I have the same rifle in 300 win mag, my brother has the 300wsm in the tikka t3 lite mine shoots lights out with 165 interbonds by hornady. My brothers on the other hand has not very good luck with great accuracy at the bench, we have tried everything scope work, trigger work after all it still kills a deer but not as near as accurate as the 300 win. As for bullets i emailed hornady and asked if they planned to make wsm rounds the reply no, he has tried about every factory round and is now shooting 150 grain winchester ballistic tips for deer they shoot ok.
