Got rid of the 300WSM M70 Extreme Weather for something smaller and went back to something similar from about 12 years ago.

700 SPS SS 270 Winchester with a VX3 3.5-10x40 CDS sitting in Talley extra-low lightweights. Also has the Leupold Alumina scope caps, which blow Butler Creeks away (but they should at 4x the $). Only shot one group so far, right at one inch. Thinking it will do quite a bit better since it only has a dozen rounds through it. Also plan on fluting the bolt, similar to the titanium pattern.

Like the Winchester fine, but sold it to downsize so my nephew could use it and the 270 is quite a bit easier on the shoulder than a 300WSM.

Sweet rig !!!  I did a similar conversion to my 700 ADL .30-06.  I slapped it into a Remington synthetic BDL stock that I snagged up for $20, added a "Kwik Klip" drop magazine conversion into it (with a spare clip) and have my Leupy 2-7x40 VXii atop it... the trigger's been worked over and is light/crisp.

Finally got out to a range again and tried a few different loads @ 200 yards. Used Hornday 130 SSTs, 140 SST Superperformance (Light Magnum) and Federal 140 Accubonds. The ABonds were hitting a good 8 inches left of everything else, haven't seen that happen before. Overall the Superperformance loads are most accurate so far.

First group was around 1 3/4" (200 yards remember), another 1 5/8" with two shots measuring 5/8", and another with the SP loads was 1 3/4" with 2 shots 1/3" apart. Had a couple of stupid groups open way up too so looking at getting the rifle bedded and continue breaking it in. Only has 32 rounds through it so far.

Seems like it wants to shoot, hope after bedding and more break-in I can get that one bullet around the other two for a sub 1/2 MOA gun  but who knows...

I'm wondering if that particular loading is just one that your barrel just doesn't sync with.  The unfortunate thing with factory loads is... if they don't match your barrel's harmonics... well... ya just gotta move on to a different load.  At least with rolling your own... you can see if another 50fps one direction or the other finds that sweet spot when the barrel isn't fluttering as the bullet leaves the muzzle.

So overall I really like the new extra low Talleys, but I had one problem with them. Because they are so low now I couldn't move the scope as far forward as I liked since the magnification ring was running into the base. So tonight after I shot some arrows in the backyard I pulled out the rifle, took the scope off along with the rear Talley and went to the garage. Used a grinder to take off some of the rear of the base so I could move the scope forward that last bit I wanted. Didn't need to take off a whole lot, just a little off the corner. Mounted it back up, feels good and looks better too. Very little clearance for the mag ring, but it does clear and doesn't rub.

Now just to get that bolt fluted and order myself a B&C Alaskan

i think i might try the talley's next time.  everyone seems to love them.

so just curious, after using the rifle a little more, are the leupy scope caps still worth the extra$. if so, in what ways.

I was a doubter of the Aluminas as first. All doubt went away as soon as I actually held them. Certainly not your cheap plastic Butler Creeks, but at four times the price, they'd better exceed in all ways. And they do.

Couple things Ill add after using Aluminas...
The front cap does ride on the scope when fully open. And being there aluminum you will have a slight mark up on the scope after not much time. After years of use Id suspect it to get worse....

There well built. Maybe too well. If you snag a But Creek on a branch its a cheap easy replacement. The Aluminas are tougher and I was always afraid of them tweaking the hinge mechinism. Not that that would blow the shot or what not. But at the price Id hate to call them disposable/replaceable.

As far as function goes...They cover your scope ends, they look really good, and the rear button works good for opening the cover. The front is also easy opening but they do not open themselves at the site of an animal. LOL

Do they do more than a Butt Creek? No. They just look and feel better. On my 800 dollar scope I like em. But Im very careful with that rig. I almost hate taking it in the brushy woods. Lol

On my new woods rifle it will be a vx3 with butt creeks....

That .270 will do the job.  My buddy kills his elk every year with one.
