What do you guys look for when trying to find turkeys?
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:03:19 PM »
I'm sure there are a lot of new turkey hunters without a ton of experience out there, so I thought it might be helpful to have a thread to get them started.

I know one of the hardest parts about learning to turkey hunt is figuring out what good turkey areas look like.

Personally, I like to focus on areas with fairly narrow draws that funnel down into grassy flats and meadows.  High ridge points are a good place to start looking / listening for bird activity, as birds often roost on these points and funnel down to do their business during the day.

What about the rest of you?  What do you all look for / consider to be a prime turkey spot?

Water, small streams and small rivers are natural highways for birds, creeks and small rivers have thick cover that the birds like.  If you have birds in an area you can followed the waterways to new areas the birds expand every year.

Welcome!
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

First thing I do is drive around an area in the early morning, late evening hours and look for birds.  Then talk to locals-not only will they occasionally tell you where they regualrily see birds, they'll often tell you who will let you hunt and who wont.  (Mush easier to get permison now because many locals reserve the opening week for family and will now let others hunt).  Get out early before daylight in prime areas and just quietly listen for birds on the roost.  Everyone who is an "experienced" turkey hunter can give you many instances of "blowing it" and if you look at if correctly, that's part of the fun.  Remember it's sport hunting, not harvesting.

LOL..My first response. Here Ducky Ducky.. I would drive as much country as you can and talk to as many people as you can.  I talk with school bus drivers, Rural Mail carriers..UPS guys ( what can brown do for you!)..LOL...Also I hunt areas away from other hunters..but pay attention to where others are hunting..that will give you an idea where turkeys maybe.  Don't trespass..take the time to get to know landowners..invest yourself it will be worth it in the end.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!
