New washington deer hunters looking to organize a camp
« on: April 26, 2010, 08:19:45 PM »
As many here know, I'm taking my 8 year old out for his first deer hunt this fall.  We are looking at GMU 121 or 117.  We are trying to organize a camp and are inviting people.  I have a couple of friends going but, they're only going to be there for a few days and then they need to get back to the world.  I am trying to organize this for the modern firearm season.  We have plenty of open spots, kids encouraged so my son has someone to talk to.  We'll be scouting in July and Sept and will be in camp the entire season.  I am willing to share any deer me or my son get if someone can come in and play "Camp Keeper" and make sure camp is running, cooking, cleaning and what not.  Now taking applications  :chuckle:.  PM me and let me know if you're interested.

I know.  We're putting in for a bunch of tags too.  We'll see what we get.  Even getting skunked will be ok.  I just want him to have the experience.  Deer meat makes the experience all the better.

Why do you need a camp keeper? Part of the outdoor experience is learning how to keep a fire, Cooking your own food out side with out a microwave and not having Mom there to make your bed in the morning. I think its more fun for them to take care of themselves then have someone else do it for them. Thats just me though.. Have fun no matter what you do...

Everyone in our camps chip in and do all the bitch work like getting wood, doing dishes, cooking, set up, tear down, etc. All part of the experience and I think it shows kids that work can be fun. I never hear anyone comlain about doing chores in elk camp.  :twocents:

bitch work??   Everything in Camp is play :chuckle: :chuckle: cooking like a pig, bashing wood with an
axe, setting up tarps/tents="fort building"

the only drag is packing up to go home and back to work...having a bunch of new meat helps

Back in the 80's hunting the wet side up the Skokomish River valley, we would all put in $50.00 and one of my hunting buddies wife would do our shopping and cook in camp. She loved it, we made out big time. She would have the fire going, coffee brewed and bacon and eggs cooked up well before first light. Our lunches would  be fried Indian bread with Cinnamon, jam etc.. (about 20 rolled up and stacked into a ziplock) jerky,  cookies and trailmix. Then she would make homemade chili and stews for dinner.

We sure ate well when she was around.

Now we go for the quick eats, hamburgers and hotdogs mostly. Easy to fix and filling.

I was incorrect in what I was looking for.  Anyone that wants to come along to our deer camp, please let me know.  You all have very valid points that there should be no "Camp keeper".  I would like to make this an annual thing if possible.
