I gave Permission
« on: April 30, 2010, 01:42:46 PM »
Had 3 fellas drive up yesterday afternoon....wanted to know if I allowed turkey hunters on my place...  I said "Sure... but I have 1 Rios Tom I want left alive, but anyothers are free game...   and that there are also a few bearded hen's I want left alone cus they may be sitting on nests....   but if you want a bearded hen...  come back in the fall and your welcome to them"
They headed down across one of my field's where I have a blind set up in case anyone want's to use it...  They were down there for about 40 minutes, and left the blind...   came up to the house to say they might be back later that afternoon....  or in the morning...  I said "Great...  just fill your tag's. Not more than 15 minutes after they left, I looked out the window..  and saw about 6 of the boy's walking up the field towards the house...   walked right passed the blind, crossed the road and up the hill. The hunters showed back up about 5:15 and headed back to the blind....  just before 6:00 pm, they walked back to thier truck and left...  not more than 10 minutes later..  I look down there...   and saw a nice Tom, 9 Jakes, and 6 hen's. Guess I should have told em "Patience is a virture".
As I was putting the dog's in thier kennel's this morning, before I headed off to work...  All I could hear was Tom's gobbling and hen's yelping...  and as I drove down the drive...  there they all were... in the middle of the road, and no huters to be seen.. :bash:  Wounder I I had charged them a $50.00 deposit, refundable when they filled thier tag's...  if they might have been alittle more into hunting.. :IBCOOL:

Wife said the hunters showed up around 7:30 this morning..  just before she went to work...  have no idea if they filled thier tags or not..   but so far..  all I've seen this afternoon/evening, has been 2 bearded hen's....  generally there's a whole flock gone through by now.

Wayne, it is very nice of you to offer your place to hunters. Perhaps this fall I will get a hold of you for a turkey, deer youth hunt for the kids :IBCOOL:. We got my son on birds for the youth season, but none tagged. I am dieing to get him back over for another shot but he really needs to understand the importance of school before I take him out for more hunting :bash: :bash:. He is plenty smart just has no patience to sit at a desk all day. Sometimes it is tough being the DAD, I like looking at him as my buddy more often then my son.

Wayne 1, I am impressed with your kindness.  I must admit that I was expecting a bad ending to your story: "..and then I found a dead Rio next to some dead bearded hens...".  Glad to know you were treated well.  I wish you the best for your generosity, and hope that everyone treats you with the respect you deserve.

Curious Wayne1 as to where the Rio came from, if you know?  Back in the earlier years of turkey hunting here in NCW, Rio's were the species here.  After all the transplants over the years from your neck of the woods, they're basically all Merriams now.  Seen a few Easterns killed here in the past few years (homegrown origin), but not a Rio in quite a while.

It's a great feeling to knock on a door and have the folks say yes. 75% of my hunting is on private land, without people like you it wouldn't be possible. Good deal

Mr. Wayne, as so many others have already noted, I'm surprised and impressed with you giving permission to hunt.  It's nice to see that the birds you asked to be left alone have been.  I'm new to the west coast and got my first deer last season and near the colville area at that!  Adding my first turkey would be a real treat.  Sounds like you may be all booked up though.  If things cool down, I'd love to come out and try my hand.  I could probably even rustle up a few venison roasts and some burger if you like that kinda thing ;)
