2010 turkey weight
« on: May 01, 2010, 07:09:00 PM »
It appears that the turkeys wintered well and their weight is bigger than normal. I have seen what I would call 2 year old birds weighted at 21.5 pounds and reports of other birds over 20 pounds.

I have so far shot only a jake, he had more fat than I have ever seen in a spring bird.

What are you all seeing?

Normally that is in the range..a little heavy..but with the lighter than normal winter..I would expect it..I know that is the case with me..LOL.
Wild Turkey, Walleyes, Whitetails and Wapiti..These are a few of my favorite things!!

Didn't weigh them, but the first bird I shot this year was definitely bigger than the second, though I think both were two year olds. The first one might have been a 3 year old, but in that rocky country it is hard to base the age off of spur length.

Anyways, the first one was definitly a bigger bird weight wise...but that could be because his craw was full of "wild bird feed." He was eating well, and I guess those subdevelopment yuppies that decide to move their homes into turkey country and feed the birds will save on a little food as of April 16, 2010.  :chuckle: The first one also came from an area that had a much much milder winter than the second bird.

On average, I don't know, I never weigh them, so my contribution to this thread was nothing. Oops.

I did notice the birds we got right of the roost without a full craw still were 20 lbers. I haven't hunted turkeys for two years and before that I killed turkeys each year. They do seem to be holding there wt. this year.
