elk choices for muzzy....
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:36:59 PM »
I put in for muzzy elk on the east side again this year and thought this new permit system would suck but now i know it really sucks.  Of course the quality tag has some great options- but then when you go to decide on the bull tag you have two choices, Two! Of course you have to buy the app for it to keep adding to your points,  but couldn't they have thrown out a few more choices for our 6 bucks! The two options were alkali and a teanaway late hunt, don't know about the teanaway hunt but i wouldn't put my 15 points on the alkali hunt. I spent 59 extra dollars this year just on the special permit apps!! :bdid:

you should have 2 quality bull choices and 4 regular bull choices...if you don't like the choices you should have just used your ghost point option or maybe just put 1 choice that you like down.

Just the thing I've been noticing. There are quite a few examples of this. It's absolutely ridiculous. Now those are a coupe of hunts in which the odds just became 100 times worse than what they were before. Anybody who has a eastside muzzleloader tag and wants to apply in the bull elk category, has to pick those two hunts. After all, you have up to 4 choices!

Look at the Senior elk category. Only two hunts are listed in the entire category, so they made those available to any senior with a westside elk tag (both are on the westside.) Just think how bad the odds will be on those!

Same thing with moose. Only two options in the youth category, two options in the senior category, 1 option in the disabled hunter category, and two in the antlerless category. WHY did they make a "category" for only 1 or 2 hunts?   :bash:

There should be two categories for each species:  buck/bull and antlerless. That's it. The disabled, senior, and youth tags are antlerless hunts anyway and could have been included with all the other antlerless hunts, in the antlerless category.

at least the eastside has decent choices, the westside choices stink.

Tru dat..  There division of hunts for quality vs regular really suck for the the archery and Muzzy user groups.

It will take me some time to use my points wisely.. Im going to need to change my weapon several times to get the hunts I want..

It sure seems like they pimped out the elk on those September rifle hunts just so they could create a "Quality" permit application doesn't it.....$$$$$$$$$$ :bs:

I did just do ghost points for the bull tag, my point was there was only two choices- and the new system sucks.

My old man and I drew the late muzzy teanaway hunt a few years back. We hunted our tails off and both ended up with empty tags. We did pass up on some cows as we were holding out for a decent bull but we fought the weather the whole time. The first two days of the hunt were in the 50's and from there on out it got really really cold and snowed like mad. One day it was actually -14 when we got out of my truck. By the final day or two of the hunt, there was probably two feet of snow on the ground where we had wanted to hunt and it limited our locations. There are tons of elk in the unit and I would love to try that hunt again but from our experience there is def better choices!  :dunno:

:beatdeadhorse: This subject is going to be cussed and discussed for months to come. YES, IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY! The WDF&W aren't really that stupid, they get all of us to spend senseless monies on impossible draws. Their new rifle bull tags during the rut, definitely a money maker for them with only 2 permits offered, and 6.50 a application times an average of 5,000 apps., means $32,500.00 for two bulls, no brain er they lose more to predators or poachers a year than the two bulls in one area.  If you take the average for most of their so called quality hunts, and even some bull/buck areas, most of the success percentages are around 2.5 to 3% on average. With that percentage some of the math calculates out to never being drawn on their averages, well I guess if you live to be 150 years old or more. Even a late buck hunt in  Greyback Unit 388 gives you the chance to draw once every thirty years. Lets face it Washington sucked before and they have made it even worse. It would be nice but will never happen, we all need to ban together and not apply in any categories and break them of their legalize racketeering, I know I'm on a pipe dream I know, I know!  :bash:

What the hell are the odds going to be for those two EM bull hunts going to be? Every eastside muzzleloader hunter has to put in for those two permits ( except for points only)

-Having only 2 choices in that pool is good! Even better if it was just 1!

I don't think you understand. You can apply for up to 4 choices in that category. But, if you have an eastside muzzleloader elk tag, they only offer two hunts on the eastside for muzzleloaders in the bull elk category. How is that a good thing?

I understand perfectly! And like I said I wish there was only one hunt in this catagory, Alkali, just one hunt to choose from, or even better and just dump this entire pool! Think about why bud!

OK, well I don't understand why you would wish that. This particular instance doesn't affect me, but for somebody that has been applying for either the Alkali or Teanaway muzzleloader hunt, I don't see how it is a good thing for them. As I've said several times, I do think there should not be a "bull" category along with the "quality bull" category. All they need is a bull elk category and a cow elk category. Is that what you are saying ???
