Got my 09 Lope back yesterday.
« on: May 09, 2010, 06:07:54 AM »
I know I know he's a smally. But it was my first lope hunt and I got excited.   :mgun:  Actually I chose to shoot because he had great hooks, I just forgot to look at the cutters.     Guess I got "Buck fever"

THANKS FUSON'S!!!! Darin................. "YOU DA MAN!"

Nice mount! There's noyhing wrong with it's size. Plus you wouldn't want it to over shadow your other mounts. ;)

DOesn't look small to me.  If I draw Montana this year, that's a dead goat in my book.  Love them prongs...

Thanks guys I appreciate all the compliments. If any of you draw for the first time pass this guy up. They are there by the hundreds if not thousands. This buck would be equivelant to a 100-110 class whity in an area filled with 120's and 130's. I'm really not a trophy guy but in such a target rich environment like WY you may as well be picky. I saw many many bucks bigger than this after I shot this guy. But like I said I wanted one with good curls and thats what I saw here. I forgot to check the cutters before I pulled the trigger.

I actually went through an outfitter and he wanted the hunt to be done so he didn't hold me back. I was also promised we'd shoot prairie dogs, and coyote hunt for the rest of the time which didn't really happen. If I knew then what I knew now I would have let this buck walk. I believe that just about anybody whos been there would agree with me here.

All of that said I'm happy with him. They are just about the coolest critter in the 48 as far as I'm concerned. I can't wait to go back. WooHoo!!!!

It was J's outdoors or something to that affect. Basically once we finished we sat in the lodge. He had a hunting show filming a hunt out there while I was there and that seemed to be a major concern of his. I try not to be sour but the hunt was not at all what i expected. I read some or bearpaws hunts and it seems like he puts in WAY more effort on hunting not just shooting any goat. My goat was down 15 minutes into the 1st morning. We never did do any yote hunting and the prairie dog shooting I did do was right at the lodge in a small p-dog town. I brought 1000 rounds and shot about 50. Don't get me wrong it was fun but when i booked the hunt I specifically asked what we would do if we tag out on the first day. "Anything you want" Coyotes, prairie dogs, whatever. Then when I was there he says to me "I don't know why everyone asks about prairie dogs." I should have said because we pay over $2000.00 for this hunt and want do more that sit in the lodge. I was going to buy 2 doe tags but he said we don't walk more than 100 yards off the road for a doe so I only bought 1. I wanted to put in some stalks with my 45/70 with iron sites but obviously that didn't happen. Basically I didn't have any intent on paying that much just to road hunt.

I guess he has several guides under him so maybe they hunt differently but I was with the outfitter and it was quite apparent his mind was elsewhere the whole time.

My favorite part was going to the grocery store and waiting for over a 1/2 an hour in the parking lot while he "just ran in". Or hearing how 2 of his parties damn near got arrested for trespassing because he hadn't secured the lease. This happened to the guys who were filming the show while I was there. It didn't really instill a lot of confidence.

I've said more than i should have already but be very very carefull before you book a hunt. I thought I asked the right questions but obviously didn't.

I could go on and on but I think I'll just leave it where it is. If you want any more info pm me.

Sorry to hear about the guide.  Still looks like a nice goat to me.  Still dead if I draw Montana.  I am buying points in WY, so that might be a different story...
Thanks for sharing.  I think the moral of the story is; Hunt with Bearpaw next time...? :dunno: ;)
