there are many thing to help protect you in this sport, as well as some thing you should not do. ams makes 2 of these products that i feel help keep me and others safe the biggest 1 is the ams safty slide which can be seen in the pic below on the blue arrow. the black slide fits over the shaft of the arrow and slides back and forth. the point stops it in the front and in the back there is a plastic stop that is held in place with a screw. this system keeps the line that is hook to the slide infront on the bow/string/rest. this s a kep safty point line use to be hooked to the back of the arrow and some people still do this and this can cause snap back when the arrow is shot the line tangles into the string/cabeals/rests and etc and can snap back and cause injurey or death. by keeping the line out front it prevent this from ever having the chance to happen. the other is a reel the ams retiver reel this is a bottle reel that has a 0 drag system it is reeled in like a fishing reel with the trigger pulled down i have shot them for year and never had one problem depending on the line you have between 20-35 yards of line. this reel is on all of my bowfishing bows and is in the 2 pic

The AMS reel is a great piece of equipment.  Added safety, no lost arrows and quicker follow up shots. 

We started out with the cheaper shoot through hand wind type reels.  I bought an AMS and would get multiple shots off while my partner was still pulliing and winding line.  He ordered one when we got home.

that is how i started as well very safe and like you said you can sure buzz those arrows back in to get the next shot off proably 5x faster= more fish in the the boat

Great tips on the safety equipment.  Hard to argue with the safety slides!  I personally don't use them and have never had a problem.  A little common sense goes a long ways, however I do agree and would recommend them since you never know when the wind is going to bite you in the rear.  As far as the AMS retriever reel, I find a lot of drawbacks.  Hard to pull in a fish when if you were using a conventional 888, 808, or muzzy xd reel you can reel them right in and not have to worry about gloves or cut fingers not to mention slower shooting due to lost time during recovery of hit fish.  Windy situations can cause problems due to the zero drag and next thing you know you are dragging all of your line behind you.  There are drawbacks in both types of setups however.  They are definately safer in my mind, but at a cost.

i have been shooting them for years and never had one cut or one problem and have shot every setup out there good luck when you forget to push that buttom in the heat of the moment.lol also there is a line clip on the ams reels that holds the line from the wind taking it i have bows that have been setup with spinners and will have one again soon. i product test for bowfishingextreme and they have a new reel seat i will be testing for them soon but 80 out of 100 prefer the ams. i am also a memeber of bowfishing country might check it out have about 7200 members there and lots of pulls on gear and such. but to each there own and as long as you are out there thats one more for our sport.
