Port Angeles Halibut Derby
« on: May 10, 2010, 04:53:09 PM »
I know how to fish and have my own gear. The only problem is I don't have a boat. :bash: I caught a 42 lb'er 27th place last year, $160.00 fish. I'm looking for someone with an open seat for the Derby this year. I will help with gas and will clean all the fish.

I'm trying really hard to get ready for the derby myself, I hear they have really been catching the fish lately and I'm not ready  :( I should be ready by then though but don't know yet if I'll have an open seat, One thing you can be sure of is that you won't have to clean any fish if you went with me !!!  :bash:

Not really we did really good in 05 with 3rd (89lb) and like 26th (53lb) or something which was nice to finally go fishing for free for once LOL !!!

Hope the weather is good, I'm hoping to get down to the west end and I hate crossing that Elwah bar when its nasty !!!

I marked the spot with my GPS last year, it's about 3 miles out. We caught a 48 lb'er the next weekend after the derby there last year. :dunno:

Isn't that memorial day weekend? Man I would love to fish in the derby. But I'm with you Ben, no boat. Hmmm. Just thought of something. The brother and sister in law are getting stationed in Guam. They are going to be storing there boat in P.A. for us to use at the cabin. Since they will be bringing the boat up that weekend maybe I can talk them in to fishing the derby. When do you have to buy your ticket's by?

Jimmy,
I see guys out here with 15' boats all the time. I would prefer at least an 18' boat and pay attention to the wind.

I've seen guys out there in 12ft Lunds! Millpond day and I still thought they were stupid! I'd say 17 ft with 14" of freeboard in about minimum... and watch the weather extremely carefully.

I've spent lots of time out there in 50 ft steel commercial boats, and when it blew up I wished I was someplace else! (It can come up in a matter of 30 minutes too.)

Yeah, nothing on the board for us, I was reeling up a halibut that would have been on the board for sure but my buddy had a doggie on and it got wrapped around my line and eventually just broke my line, he felt really bad but whatever that's my luck !
I did catch one 25# for the bbq so alls well that ends well and we had fun, oh I caught a skate as well POS !  :bash:

We started at Coyote Bank, Lost my gear w/200 ft of line. Then lost another 200 ft, using 48 oz's. Had to realty watch your pole and just touch the bottom w/pole in hand out there. We moved in between there and 31-36, then finished at the 31-36. Dog fish the whole way.  :bash: Fun times.

I call that 31-36 bank the Bermuda triangle, since nothing nice ever happens to me out there in fact everything bad happens so I avoid that place like the plague !

We fished Freshwater hard both days and came up with a 37 on saturday (that was 24 at end of day) and an 18 about 1:45 yesterday. We have been doing great at Freshwater all year but just one bite each day of the derby. It was frustrating because the derby was real win-able or at least place-able with any kind of reasonable fish and we just couldn't get in front of one. We knew from the past unless it was a blowout the 37 would never last as you usually have to get one at least in the lower 40's to make the ladder. It was by FAR the greatest Halibut fishing for #'s of fish caught in the area this year and I have been fishing there for years. I just hope the "quota" deal doesn't shorten the season any more then it is next year because so many lbs of Halibut came in this year. Looking forward to next year........Les
