shooting/hunting stuff
« on: May 11, 2010, 08:34:21 PM »
I just picked up some Hornady SST-ML 50cal 300gr. bullets ,some Pyrodex 50/50 pellets. A Camo Safari sling and nickle Boonie Packer sling swivels for the T/C Northwest Explorer. Can't wait to go out and shoot er again pretty soon.

Nice. One thing I've noticed is the 300 grn sst bullet's shoot great out of both my T/C Black Diamond and my Knight Bighorn. With the after market high pressure sabot. They still shot good with the easy loads they came with. However I wasn't to impressed with the bullet after doing some tests with a bunch of milk jugs. Also the pellets seemed to work out good but we where getting better ignition and clean up was way easier with the 777 loose. I love my safari sling. Can't go wrong there. Good luck. Let us know how they shoot.

Blsum,
What you are seeing with the pellets is true, they are harder to ignite and will foul more due to the substance used to hold the charge together. I feel I get improved ballistic performance and easier ignition (mostly because we can not use 209 or other primers) with loose powder.

For me the extra cost of the pellets and lesser performance is not a worthy trade off. I will agree that they are convenient to use, but with good sealed vials or quick chargers and practice one can reload well under one minute with loose :twocents:.

As I understand it... the pellets were designed to be used with the 209 primers... the binders holding them together need the added benefit of the 209s... so... loose powder for the traditional gear... 209/pellets for the morphadite equipment.   ;)

According to the Pyrodex website the standard pyrodex 50/50 pellets can be used with standard caps musket caps or 209 but the triple7 pellets are to be used with 209 only.

yes super down is right. but your gun only uses #11 right? and since the musket is like 2.5 times hotter then the number 11 i would be a little bit worried needing that extra heat. i know of some people that use the pellets with #11 and have not heard anything. when i first started out years ago i used the pellets but with the musket caps and never had a problem with them. but they do foul more, and after my first year i went back to shooting loose and never looked back.
